Moore, Saccoccia earn top honors on Division IV Eastern District list

Big Red players

As one would expect, 12-0 Steubenville Big Red, preparing to play for a fifth straight regional title against Perry Friday night, racked up the accolades when the Division IV Eastern District All-Star team was released on Tuesday.

Big Red has six players named first team all-stars, the defensive player of the year in senior DL Quentin Moore, co-coach of the year in Reno Saccoccia and four players earning special mention honors.

“The award really should go to my coaching staff,” Saccoccia said of being named co-coach of the year. “I hope my coaches know how much I appreciate the work they put in for our program. I don’t have much to do with our offensive, defensive or special teams game plans. That’s all done by my coaches.

“I’ve been blessed as a coach and a person my whole life to work with some outstanding people. I just appreciate the way our coaches work and the way our players listen to their coaches and carry out what they are asked to do.”

Indian Valley’s Matt Lancaster, who guided his team to a perfect regular season, is the other half of the co-coach of the year.

Moore collected 58 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and eight sacks during the regular season. He had the game-clinching fumble recovery in last Friday’s playoff win over Cardinal Mooney and a punt blocked the week before against Salem.

The other Big Red first-teamers start with senior quarterback Javon Davis. He threw for 1,396 yards and 15 touchdowns with just four interceptions during the regular season, completing 111-of-161 passes.

Senior running back Jacob Bernard ran for 960 yards and 15 touchdowns during the regular season on 141 carries despite missing the first two games due to an injury. He added eight catches for 72 yards. So far on Steubenville’s playoff run, Bernard has 311 rushing yards and five more touchdowns.

Senior offense linemen Marion Lawrence and Alijah Demitras both earned first team honors, as well as linebacker John Agresta who compiled 55 tackles, nine tackles for loss and three sacks during the regular season. He recovered two fumbles last week against Mooney and was named player of the game.

“I want to congratulate them for earning these honors,” Saccoccia said. “I also want to let them know how much I appreciate their hard work to constantly improve. I hope they understand the honors they are receiving really represent a team effort. At the same time, I want them to know we really expect them to prepare like an all-district player and perform like one on Friday night against Perry.”

Tyler Ely, Jonathon Blackmon, DeJuan Jones and Gino Pierro received special mention honors. Big Red did not have anyone named on the second-team all-star list.

“I’m disappointed about that,” Saccoccia said of not having any second-teamers. “It’s hard to figure out how we can’t have any players on the second team.”
