CCHS welcomes five inductees into Hall of Fame

STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville Catholic Central High School held its annual hall of fame ceremony Sept. 28, and the Crusaders inducted five new members.

JAMES ‘RED’ KELLY, Class of 1958 — Kelly was a two-sport athlete as a key member of the basketball team and a two-way starter for the Crusaders football team. Kelly lettered in football his final two seasons and was the team’s MVP during his senior season in 1957. The offensive guard and defensive lineman earned first-team All Eastern Ohio and all OVAC honors.

After playing in the OVAC All-Star Classic, Kelly went to the University of Florida and played on the Gators freshman team, before finishing his football career at Xavier University.

MICHAEL HANEY, Class of 1985 — Haney was a two-sport standout for the Crusaders. He was a three-year letter winner in football. During his senior campaign, Haney was named the top quarterback in the Ohio Valley by the Wheeling Intelligencer. Haney was the school’s first 1,000-yard passer since Sam Fornsaglio in 1961, and was a first-team all-valley big school honoree, earned OVAC Class AAA honors and was named first-team all-conference by the Ohio Valley Football Coaches Association.

In his basketball career, Haney earned two letters as a point guard and helped lead the Crusaders to the regional semifinals as a junior and the district semifinals as a senior. Haney recorded more than 100 steals and 242 assists while helping the Crusaders to 31 victories. He earned all-valley big school status, first-team OVAC honors, and First-Team Eastern Buckeye League.

FRANK D. MARCINO JR., Class of 1990 — Marcino helped lead the Crusaders to their first playoff appearance in 1989, as the team qualified for the OHSAA Division IV playoffs. During his high school career, he earned three letters in football and two in baseball.

Marcino threw a no-hitter against East Liverpool during his senior season on the baseball diamond, and earned first-team all district honors. Marcino was second-team all-state as a junior. During his senior year, during which he was captain, he recorded 96 tackles, seven sacks, five quarterback pressures and a fumble recovery. He was the team’s second- leading scorer with 31 points kicking three field goals and 22 extra points. His efforts earned him Division IV offensive lineman of the year, First-Team all-Ohio Eastern District defensive lineman of the year, first-team eastern district, first-team all-valley, first-team All-OVAC and Dapper Dan honors.

He competed in the OVAC All-Star and Ohio North-South All-Star games before going to West Liberty State and lettering in football all four years.

BENJI CLAUSE, Class of 1996 — Clause earned a combined 10 varsity letters in three sports and was a part of seven OVAC championships and a state championship in baseball and football. He was a starter and two-year monogram winner in basketball.

Clause was a rare freshman letterman in football, and was an integral part in the Crusaders OHSAA Division V state championship, kicking a game-winning field goal as time expired against Bellaire to kickstart a nine-game winning streak and title run. As a junior, he led the team in scoring with 78 points, including nine touchdowns, again helping Central reach the playoffs and a conference title. He earned honorable mention all-state and All-OVAC recognition.

During his senior season, he threw for 11 touchdowns and 1,200 and was named first-team all-OVAC and special mention all-Ohio. He led the Crusaders to their third straight playoff appearance and OVAC championship, as well as the city championship.

A four-year starter in baseball, Clause earned all-valley recognition as a freshman on the OHSAA Division III state semifinalist and OVAC championship unit. He also earned all-valley honors his sophomore year as the Crusaders followed up the football championship with the 1994 OHSAA Division IV state baseball championship. His junior year, Clause earned All-OVAC and all-state honors leading the Crusaders to a third straight OVAC title and berth to the OHSAA regional final.

His senior year on the diamond, Clause earned player of the year honors and was captain of the OVAC All-Star team, was Eastern District player of the year, earned all-state accolades and was named a 1996 Mizuno All-Star while leading the Crusaders to a fourth consecutive OVAC title. He received the Macedonia-Press Award as Catholic Central’s top male athlete and the Joe Prest Scholarship before a successful Big Ten baseball career at Indiana University.

DAVID A. TUTTLE, Class of 1996 — A four sport athlete at Catholic Central, Tuttle joins his father, David R. Tuttle, as a member of the Crusaders Hall of Fame. After playing baseball his freshman and sophomore years, Tuttle lettered in track his junior and senior years, earning OVAC titles in shot put and discus and placing at the district level his senior season. He finished third in the shot put in regionals to qualify for the state meet. He was Indian League runner-up in the shot put and discus as a junior and captured both league titles his senior year.

During his basketball career, Tuttle earned three letters and averaged double digits in both scoring and rebounds as a junior to garner special mention All-OVAC and honorable mention Eastern District honors. During a stellar senior season, he averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds to earn a spot in the District Five All-Star game, where he tallied eight points and 10 rebounds.

Among his other honors that season were first-team all district, second-team All-OVAC and special mention Eastern District. By the time he graduated, Tuttle ranked in the top 10 in school history of both scoring and rebounds.

Tuttle was the most accomplished on the gridiron. As a sophomore, he started for the Crusaders 1993 OHSAA Division V state championship team, earning WTOV player of the game honors in the regular-season finale against Toronto.

As a junior Tuttle earned first-team Quad County and first-team all-district honors, as well as second-team all-OVAC honors.

During his senior season Tuttle became the Crusader’s all-time sack leader with 25, finishing in the top five in the OVAC in that category each of his final two seasons. His efforts earned special mention all-state, first-team all-district, first-team Eastern Ohio, first team Quad County and first-team all-OVAC honors.

Tuttle finished his career with eight tackles, a sack and an interception in the Penn-Ohio All-Star Classic.
