CADIZ — Harrison Central wasted little time disposing of Edison 25-21 in the first set of the Ohio Division III sectional volleyball tournament inside the John W. Stephenson Center Tuesday, but it was the Lady Wildcats who will move on as they rallied to take the next three sets.

The Wildcats, which went into the tournament as the No. 10 seed, scored 25-21, 25-22 and 29-27 victories and will play again 4 p.m. Saturday at No. 8 Ridgewood.

The final set was nip and tuck throughout and had both teams rallying in the overtime, but it was a block by Edison’s Kayla Huff that sealed the victory.

“Luckily we stayed with it and kept our heads in the game there in that last set,” Edison coach Mycaela Ensell said, whose record now is 11-12. “We played the way we knew how to play.”

The Huskies had the better record at 13-8 going in and were the No. 6 seed, but after the first set, Edison took control at the net and kept Harrison off balance while playing defense most of the time.

“We really had it going back and forth there,” Harrison head coach Sara Hawthorne said. “That’s been our big thing this year. This group of girls has always worked hard and never really given up on any plays either in practice of in games. It is definitely something that has helped us along the way. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t come out on top there at the end.

“Tonight is like the way we have played all year it was a team effort. We always have some girls step up and make plays, but for the most part it’s been a team effort. But I’m very proud of them. They didn’t give up. That’s one thing we try to instill on them this year and not just this group, but obviously for years to come..”

The Wildcats took control late in the second set, scoring three straight points for a 22-17 lead that they never relinquished. The third set was a carbon copy as the Wildcats broke a 22-22 tie with three straight points for the win.

A spike by Harrison’s Sarah Fink sent the fourth set into overtime. It was back and forth from there until Edison got the lead at 28-27 on a Harrison miscue and then pocketed the win on Huff’s block.

“The first couple of sets we weren’t closing our blocks, but in the last couple sets they really came together,” Ensell said. “Allison Crawford really had a lot of nice outside hits and Mikayla Petrisko, one of our sophomores, really stepped up on coverage very well. She just knew where to be on the court.”

McKenzie Morrsion had 14 kills and nine digs for Edison. Crawford tallied 21 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Huff delivered 40 assists, three blocks three digs, one kill and an ace.

With it being the final game for the Huskies, coach Hawthorne said she was pleased with the season, especially for the seniors.

“This group of seniors have been through two straight seasons were we were 1-19, so I think it was a nice turn around this year,” she said. “They’ve been there at the bottom. They’ve definitely worked hard and worked together even in the off season.”

The five seniors playing their final volleyball game were Lyndsay Hennis, Sarah Fink, Katie Heavilin, Shelby Mitchell and Emily Moore.
