Bruins still have room to improve

WEIRTON — The Brooke volleyball team was more consistent than Weir Wednesday night.

The teams split the first two sets, but the Bruins won the next two en route to a 25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17 victory over the Red Riders inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.

“We did not play like we have the rest of the season,” Brooke (11-15) head coach Lori Lynn Jackson said. “We played down a little bit. We were not up like we normally are. We were not on fire like we were against Edison.

“We battled back and forth. We were inconsistent in turning it on. We turned it on against bigger teams. We did not turn it on tonight. We turned it on at certain moments, but we were not consistent.”

Brooke won the first set before Weir battled back and won the second.

“It is the same thing,” Weir (3-19) head coach Carrie Magnone said. “The girls are improving. They are getting better and better every time they step onto the court. It is just the little tiny things that we aren’t able to get past. If we can get past those, we will be all right.”

Individually for the Bruins, Chloe Fox contributed 18 assists, six kills, 28 digs and six aces. Courtney Engle had nine kills, 16 digs and 10 blocks. Grace Dodson delivered 10 assists, five kills and 21 digs. Sarah Moore recorded 10 assists, four kills and nine digs. Jenna Cooper collected 19 kills and 22 digs. Landyn Haynes added eight kills and 25 digs.

“Brooke is consistent,” Magnone said. “That is our problem. We are not consistent. Our problem is our consistency. We have to be more consistent with our serves, our passes, setting the ball and hitting holes instead of hitting the ball right at people. Our biggest issue is our consistency.”

Individually for the Red Riders, Gia Fuscardo finished with five digs, three aces and three kills. Sophia Mikula collected 11 digs, two aces, two blocks and three kills. Gabby Tournay tallied four aces, five blocks and two kills. Mackenzie Greathouse added seven aces.

“I was very impressed with Weir’s performance,” Jackson said. “They have some really-nice hitters. No. 4 (Mikula) is a nice hitter, and they have another big hitter in the middle. They have a scrappy back row. We have played them a couple of times this season, and this was their strongest performance. I know they don’t have a lot of wins, but they are a good team.”

Weir is scheduled to play again at 5:30 p.m. Monday at home against John Marshall. Brooke is scheduled to play again at 5 p.m. Oct. 23 in a tri match along with Grafton at Buckhannon Upshur.

“We are closing that gap to .500,” Jackson said. “One of our strongest hitters is out with an injury. The girls came together and played hard. With one of our strongest hitters out, we had to switch our lineup.”
