Beaver spoils Buckeye’s homecoming

YORKVILLE — It was homecoming at Buckeye Local Friday night and a new queen in Maddie Gill was crowned at halftime, but the Panthers’ guests from the north that put a damper on the festivities at Memorial Stadium in Yorkville.

Hoping to kick their long losing streak to the curb, the Panthers ran headfirst into a red hot Beaver Local squad, and in the process dropped a 55-24 slugfest to the Fighting Beavers Friday night.

With the win coach, Mike McKenzie’s Beavers pushed their record to 6-1 on the season, losing only to Linsly in Week 3. Beaver faces a tough opponent next with a road trip to square off with Indian Creek.

“We’ve got some pretty good athletes,” McKenzie said after the win. “I’m proud of our kids. We are pretty banged up. Michael Clendening has been out two games, and he had 800 yards after five and was the centerpiece of our offense and our leading tackler, but we responded for two weeks now.”

Coach Roger Herbert’s Buckeye Local squad fell to 0-7 but will be looking to tack on that first win next week hosting East Liverpool.

“I think Beaver Local is a very good, probably will be the Buckeye 8 (North) champs,” Herbert said. “I was very impressed with our kids. A huge underdog, but they came out, scored first.

“Getting Shayne back was a big shot in the arm for us and Josh Dulesky had a big game. Johnny Marelli had a big game. We had some breakdowns, but our effort has been great.”

Despite the outcome, the Panthers did receive a record-setting performance for Shayne Christian in his first full varsity start. Christian completed 11-of-26 passes for a school-record 334 yards in the air.

With the high numbers of offensive yards produced by both teams, the scoring was fast and furious in a lengthy first half. Buckeye Local got on the board with a quick-strike pass from Christian to Josh Dulesky who hauled in the pass and rambled 86 yards to the score with just 1:07 gone from the clock.

Beaver Local bounced back with three scores over a 1:21 span, starting with a 34-yard Luke Call to Damien Emmert pass with 8:59 on the first quarter clock. Drew Theiss booted the first of his seven PATS.

Just 18 seconds later, the Beavers converted a Panther turnover into a 26-yard scoring pass from Call to Yanni for a 14-6 lead.

At the 7:38 mark of the frame, Jacob Kane took a Panther punt his own 48 and jitterbugged his way to a score 52 yards away.

Down 21-6, the Panthers got back on the board another Christian to Dulesky pass, covering 49 yards and adding another six-pointer.

Scoring picked up in the second quarter as Call capped off another quick Beaver Local drive with an 8-yard run that pushed the lead to 28-12 with just 15 seconds gone in the session.

Beaver followed that score up with a 25-yard scoring run by Givens with just 5:44 left in the half and Yanni, just a short time later, picked off a Buckeye Local pass and covered the 35 yards to the endzone for a 42-12 lead.

Buckeye wasn’t done as Jon Marelli collared a pass from Christian and sprinted 45 yards for a score with 1:36 left in the half.

Beaver only allowed the Panthers to enjoy that score for 40 seconds as they closed the half with a one yard run by Kane with 0:56 on the board for a 48-18 lead.

Both teams added six-pointers in the second half. Beaver added a score with 9:23 on the third quarter clock on a 5-yard Call to Noah West pass and Theiss’ final PAT.

Marelli closed out the scoring in the fourth following an 81-yard run after a catch of a Christian pass with a 3-yard run at the 10:36 mark.
