STEUBENVILLE — Harrison Central was not happy with its performance Monday night at St. Clairsville, a loss in four sets to the Red Devils. The Huskies erased the disappointment of that by coming into Steubenville on Tuesday and sweeping Big Red in impressive fashion.

“We played last night at St. Clairsville and didn’t really show up and play our game completely,” Huskies’ coach Sarah Hawthorne said. “It was really good to have a turnaround on back-to-back nights and beat these guys, who just beat St. Clairsville last week. We had some new girls we were throwing in and out of there, and we were very happy with how they did. (Steubenville) is a great team as well; they definitely gave us a run for our money.”

Lyndsey Hennis had 16 digs and nine kills for the Huskies (6-3). Sarah Fink had 10 kills, seven digs and two aces. Shelbie Mitchell had 26 assists, two kills, four digs and an ace. Katie Heavilin finished with 17 digs.

“It’s amazing,” Hennis said of sweeping Big Red. “I’m glad we came out and played our game. It felt really good since they beat St. C.”

The first two sets of the match were very tightly contested. Steubenville (3-6) started things off with a 3-0 run, which Harrison Central followed up with a 7-2 run. The sides went back and forth and were tied at 15-15.

Harrison Central started taking over. The Huskies went on yet another 7-2 run, forcing Big Red to call a timeout, and eventually fended off a late Steubenville rally to take the opening set 25-22.

“It took us a little while to play our game and do everything we wanted to,” Hennis said. “Once we got warmed up, we were ready to go. All the saves and all the hustle points helped a lot.”

Big Red did everything but win the second set. They started off with a 4-0 run and led the majority of the way. Harrison Central battled back to pull even eight times, and every time but the final deadlock Steubenville pulled back ahead. The Huskies pulled even at 24-24 after Big Red, who at one point led 20-15, had gotten one point away from evening the match, and then scored the next two points to pull off the comeback for a 2-0 lead in the match by taking the second set 26-24.

“It’s disappointing. I did not think that was going to be the outcome,” Steubenville coach Lynn Meyer said. “We can’t have 41 errors in a game. Our serving was better, and I can’t complain about our passing in the first two games. Our passes were there; we weren’t getting the sets. We were up and then we were out of system and couldn’t get back in. (Harrison Central) has a really nice team. They picked everything up that we threw at them, so we give Harrison credit.”

The third set was all Huskies right from the start as they raced out to a commanding 11-1 lead. Big Red battled back and got to within six points at 18-12, but Harrison Central tallied seven of the last eight and finished on a 6-0 run to complete the sweep with a 25-13 third set victory.

“Last night going into four sets, we kind of saw how to use our energy there,” Hawthorne said. “Maybe that helped us kind of push through in this one. We’ve had some girls stepping up for us and really getting on rolls, and that’s definitely helping a lot.”

For Big Red, Anna Taylor had 12 points, three kills and six digs. Sidney Snider had eight points, three kills and three blocks. Leah Ferguson registered eight points with 11 assists and four digs. Jaliyah Hubbard finished with six points, seven kills and four digs.

Harrison Central is back in action Thursday at Union Local. Big Red next plays at Beaver Local Saturday.
