Knights capture 8th win

BOWERSTOWN — The Toronto girls’ basketball team won its eighth game of the season with a 57-50 victory at Conotton Valley Thursday.

The Red Knights, who won once a season ago, held a 33-31 halftime lead and held off the Rockets down the stretch by going 12-for-16 from the free throw line in the final period.

Gina Fogle and Jo’zaeyah Jordan were both 5-for-6 in the period.

“I told the kids that I couldn’t be more proud of a group of people than I am of them,” Red Knights first-year head coach Rusty Hodgkiss said. “The tenacity that they play with, regardless of score or outcome, is amazing to me. It would have been easy for them to pack this season in, and get ready for softball, or track, or whatever happens for them in the spring, but they continue to show up everyday with a positive attitude and great work ethic and improved by leaps and bounds as the season progressed.”

Hollie Robinson finished with a team-high 15 points for Toronto, with 12 coming in the Red Knights’ 18-point second period.

“Every night we seemed to have someone different step up,” Hodgkiss said. “Monday Gina Fogle shut down the opponent’s best player. Tonight Jazalyn Glenn did. We got in foul trouble early, and Hollie Robinson and Sara Yarosz carried the scoring load.”

Fogle totaled 12 points, Jordan and Yarosz nine each and Glenn eight.

The Red Knights play at Bishop Rosecrans at 7 p.m. Thursday in a Division IV sectional contest.

It could be the final game for seniors Glenn, Burkey and Crystal Ford.

“Our three seniors have been remarkable leaders all year, keeping things light when they need to, and tightening the screws and getting to work when they need to,” Hodgkiss said. “Someday, when we get our program where we want it, we’ll look back at this group as the start of it all.”
