Redskins handle East Liverpool

WINTERSVILLE — Keeping possession of the ball proved to be difficult.

The Indian Creek and East Liverpool girls’ basketball teams combined for 71 turnovers and 54 points Thursday night as the Redskins took down the Potters, 34-20, at home.

The girls from Columbiana County averaged five points a quarter while committing 45 turnovers in the game, and the Blue and White did not reach double digits in scoring in any of the four quarters.

“That’s not a recipe for success,” East Liverpool (1-4) head coach Scott Rogers said. “After last night’s game — we didn’t win but we played well — I thought the momentum we had would carry over to tonight, but it did not. We flat out stunk. Our heads were not in the game at all. The biggest thing is we played bad in every aspect of the game.

“One thing with this program since I have taken over is once you start to build something, you have to carry over the momentum, and we have not been able to do that. We did not win last night, but we did play well. Tonight, we laid an egg.”

Indian Creek committed 26 turnovers in the game, but the Redskins led wire to wire. The Red and Gold led by as many as 15 points in the first half and by as many as 22 points in the third quarter.

“Twenty-six turnovers is not very good, but them having 45 turnovers I guess makes up for it,” Indian Creek coach Jackie Rossi said. “We are going to hang our hat on our defense, and hope shots are going to fall.

“We are going to have a different scorer every game. We know that.”

No player reached double digits in scoring in the game.

Indian Creek dressed just seven players for the game, and all seven players scored. Individually, Ashley Yaich and Haylie Scott each tallied nine points to be the co-leading scorers in the game.

Ten players dressed for East Liverpool, and eight of them scored. Individually, Skye Stokes scored a team-high six points, while Emma Ludwig delivered four points.

The Potters outrebounded the Redskins, 39-29. Ludwig grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead the way for the visitors, while Taylor Scott collected seven rebounds to lead the way for the girls from Jefferson County.

The hosts scored the first three points of the game, and the victors led 9-2 after the first quarter. East Liverpool committed 14 turnovers in the first quarter, while Indian Creek committed eight.

The Redskins outscored the Potters, 14-6, in the second quarter to build a 23-8 advantage at halftime. The girls in blue committed 30 turnovers in the first half, while the girls in white committed 14.

Monday night in a loss at Edison, some of the Indian Creek players were hesitant to shoot. The Redskins were not hesitant to shoot against the Potters, but they were not getting their shots to drop, especially early on in the game.

“We were super hesitant in our last game,” Rossi said. “We attacked better tonight.

“At the end of the game, we had the lead, and I called a couple of timeouts. I had to explain to them how to play with a lead. That is something we have not done yet. We still have work to do.

“We are going to work on things at practice, but the thing is we have very-coachable kids. We need that. After a win, you would think they would be celebrating, but they were all talking about things they need to improve on. These are the kind of kids we need to have right now.”

Indian Creek outscored East Liverpool, 13-12, in the second half. The Redskins led 29-13 entering the fourth quarter.

“Indian Creek hustled all game,” Rogers said. “They had four sophomores and a junior on the court. They wanted it. I loved the way they played. I have to say it, they took us to the woodshed. We were not ready to play. I am not making excuses.”

Both teams are scheduled to play Monday in Columbiana County. Indian Creek will play at Buckeye 8 rival Beaver Local, while East Liverpool is scheduled to play Lincoln Park at home inside Potter Fieldhouse.
