Petrisko leads Steubenville past Riders

Mike Mathison WEDNESDAY HOOPS — Steubenville senior Rhiannon Petrisko snares a rebound and scores two of her game-high 31 points in front of Weir’s Bailey Stead (24) and Julia Gianni during the first half of Wednesday’s 57-34 Big Red victory inside the Crimson Center.

STEUBENVILLE — Senior post player Rhiannon Petrisko scored every point for Big Red in the first quarter in a 57-34 victory over Weir High inside the Crimson Center Wednesday evening.

She had 20 in the first eight minutes and finished with a game-high 31 as Steubenville moved to 1-2.

“Rhiannon is pretty good and we did a good job of getting her the ball tonight,” second-year Big Red head coach Jeff Lombardo said. “She was in the right spot for all of our offensive rebounds.

“We have to make sure we have two others, besides her, to combine for 15 or 20 points a game.”

Junior point guard Seana Ragusa added 13 points, including a trio of treys.

Bailey Stead and Julia Gianni evenly split 22 points for the (0-4) Red Riders.

“Defensively, this is the second game in a row where we’ve had a tough cover,” Lombardo said. The other being Buckeye Local’s Emily Holzopfel Monday. “Bailey can play in the post and outside. She was out focus and we held her to 11 points, but, more importantly, only two points in the first half.

“Sarah Brown did an outstanding job on her defensively.”

Petrisko had six points, Ragusa five and Taylor Haney three in the second quarter as Big Red held a 34-14 lead at halftime.

“We need to get better at everything,” second-year Weir High coach Rick Stead said. “We’re playing varsity basketball with four sophomores on the floor most of the time, along with a senior (Fran Farran) and a junior (Stead). We are young and we will make mistakes that young teams make.

“They’re still young kids and there are a lot of things we still need to develop.

“We need to rebound and box out better. We need better spacing on the court — things like that.

“But, I told the girls, those things will develop as long as we keep coming to practice and as long as we keep working hard. I thought we gave a better effort in the second half.”

Both teams play Monday — Weir High entertains Edison and Steubenville welcomes Harrison Central.
