Crusaders win on the road at Bridgeport
BRIDGEPORT — Brittany Bertoia came up big when Catholic Central’s girls basketball team needed her the most Thursday night.
The senior point guard drained four consecutive free throws in the game’s final 30 seconds as the Crusaders escaped the John Havlicek Gymnasium with a 44-41 victory over Bridgeport.
Central, now 3-1, jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead as freshman Isabella Oliver, making her first varsity start, knocked six points and Bertoia connected for five. The Bulldogs, however, outscored their guests 18-11 to tie things at the break. Lauren Neer had eight during the second period. The Crusaders were up 33-29 heading into the fourth.
Bertoia took game scoring honors with 21 and dished out seven assists. Oliver finished with 10, all in the opening half, for Central, which is off until Dec. 15 when it visits Toronto.
Neer, who connected four times from behind the arc, had 14 for Bridgeport, which fell for the third time in four starts. Angela Sommer netted eight.

Edison tops BL
CONNORVILLE — The Edison girls basketball team defeated Buckeye Local, 44-36, on Thursday.
Edison was paced by a strong second quarter as the Wildcats had a 10-2 run against the Panthers.
Kayla Huff led the Wildcats with 14 points and Skylar Fankhouser added 12 points. For Buckeye Local, Alaire Destifanes scored 14 points for the Panthers and Emily Holzapfel added 11.
Buckeye plays again on Thursdau, hosting Beaver Local. Edison is back at it on Saturday with a 5 p.m. tip against Barnesville.
