Maroon Knights top Creek

MINGO JUNCTION — The match came down to finishing.

The Wheeling Central girls’ soccer team did a better job of capitalizing on its opportunities to score and came away with a 3-1 victory over Indian Creek Monday at Muth Field.

“We knew what to expect,” Indian Creek (3-4-3) head coach Joe Lewis said. “We knew they were a very fast team. We have a fast team  and we were able to run with them.

“I was pleased with how we possessed the ball. It was our best game of possessing the ball and passing the ball. Their defense was solid. We possessed the ball, but we could just not find the net.”

Wheeling Central was able to bounce back with a win after a heartbreaking loss to Madonna in the OVAC Class 1A/3A Final at St. Clairsville High School Saturday. The Blue Dons beat the Maroon Knights, 1-0, in double overtime.

“I knew we would bounce back,” Wheeling Central (7-6) head coach Cecily Powell said. “I thought we were the better team. I knew whoever we played next we were going to punish. We were so angry on the bus after the game.

“We played a pretty sound game. I am always pleased whenever we play a game, and we don’t have any injuries and we come away with a win.”

Hannah Dieffenbaugher, Patricia Tiu and Mackenzie Smith all tallied goals for the Wheeling Central. Claire Dieffenbaugher recorded a pair of assists for the victors. Maria Murphy made two saves in goal.

Kelsey Lewis collected the lone goal for the hosts. It was unassisted.

“We work on it in practice,” Coach Lewis said about his team’s inability to finish. “We made the passes. If you can make accurate passes, then you should be able to take accurate shots. I think some of it is nerves. They get nervous, and they rush the shot. When they do have time, they are not placing their shot. They are rushing.”

Katie Scott stopped four shots in goal for the Redskins.

“They had five defenders,” Powell said. “We have not played against team who has had five defenders. We have played again four but not five. Every time we had a corner kick, we had everybody in the box. It was 10 on five or six.”

Wheeling Central plays at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tyler Consolidated.

“It is always nice to get back over .500,” Powell said.

Indian Creek hosts Weir at 5 p.m. Thursday, then will play Edison at noon Saturday at Harding Stadium.

“It was a good game,” Coach Lewis said. “Wheeling Central is a good team. The ball bounced their way. The ball bounced around in the box. No. 11 (Smith) scored on a great shot from the outside. The ball bounced their way in the box. They are a good team. It was a good game.”
