Steubenville’s Porter has a big day

MINGO JUNCTION – Sierra Porter began her senior season in grand fashion.

Porter recorded a career-high five goals to lead the Big Red girls’ soccer team to a 7-4 victory against Indian Creek Saturday afternoon on the opening day of the season at John Muth Field.

“I definitely was not expecting to score five goals going into the game,” Porter said. “I have a lot of good girls to back me up. They have a lot of speed, and they are athletic. I think we can go far. I think we can go farther than we did last season.”

Porter tallied three goals in the first half before collecting two more in the second half.

“She is a hard worker,” Robinson said. “She is determined. When she gets going, she is of the mindset and attitude that no one is going to stop her. She is going to do what it takes to get the job done. She also has a lot of speed. Her speed up front helps.”

Porter’s five goals are the most any Big Red has scored in a single game in Robinson’s four years as head coach.

“I think our highest has been four,” Robinson said. “I think two girls have scored four.”

Porter used her speed to get past the Indian Creek defense en route to her big day on the pitch.

“I’d say my strength is my speed, and getting it up the field,” Porter said.

Also for Big Red (1-0), junior Marissa Howcroft contributed a goal and an assist, sophomore Emma Cotter netted a goal and junior Hannah Masloski added an assist.

Sophomore goalie Gillian Haught tallied two saves.

“I’d say the strength of the team is getting the ball down the field,” Porter said.

Porter has been playing soccer she was young, but she never had a day quite like the one she had Saturday against the Redskins (0-1).

“No, never,” Porter said. “I have never scored five goals in a game before. The five goals made up for last season.”

She has been playing the beautiful game for more than a decade.

“I have played since I was at least 7,” Porter said. “I am going to be 18, so I have played for 11 years. I came into Big Red my junior year.

“I have always loved soccer. It is my favorite sport. It keeps me in shape. I want to play in college.”

“I like how athletic you have to be to play it and how in shape you have to be. I also like the feeling of scoring goals. It is always fun to celebrate.”
