Brooke girls soccer ties Winfield

WINFIELD – Brooke played its way to a 1-1 tie with Winfield to open the girls soccer season on Friday.

After a scoreless first half, Cheyenne Hudson got the Bruins on the board with an assist from Alexis Stevens.

Winfield’s Kaylee Cross scored a few minutes later to even it up.

For Brooke, Payge Farmer made four saves.

Winfield is the two-time defending Class AAA state champions. Brooke is back in action today at Buckhannon-Upshur.

Blue Dons card a win over Crusaders

STEUBENVILLE – In a battle of small-school golf, Weirton Madonna carded a 154-169 victory over Steubenville Catholic Central Friday at Steubenville Country Club.

Blue Dons freshman Howie Peterson captured medalist honors with a 1-under 35. Madonna has won five OVAC Class A team championships in a row.

Matt Lyons fired a 38, Hunter Payne a 40 and Nick Mazur a 41 for the Blue Dons.

Austin Meronoff paced the Crusaders with a 1-over 37. Nick Ivkovich added a 38, while Kevin Wells shot 46 and Matt Fischer a 48.

Potters lead Buckeye 8

CADIZ – The first round of the Buckeye 8 golf championship was held Friday at a soggy Cadiz Country Club.

East Liverpool, in its first Buckeye 8 championship, grabbed the overall lead with an impressive first round 319, led by first-round leader Isaac Davidson’s 1-over 73.

The tournament will conclude with a second round at Belmont Hills Country Club on Sept. 2. After the second round, the top five golfers will be named first-team and the next five placers will be named second-team Buckeye 8, as well as crowning the overall team champion.

St. C tops Harrison Central

CADIZ – St. Clairsville beat Harrison Central in four sets in volleyball action on Friday, 25-15, 25-10, 22-25, 25-22.

For the Huskies, Kaylee Toland had nine kills and 12 points; Tirzah Curry had 19 digs and Michala Saffell had 15 assists

Rebekah Sadlowski led St. Clairsville with nine points, eight aces, 11 digs and 12 kills.

Cancer awareness event to be held

STEUBENVILLE – The “Together for a Cure” soccer spectacular will be held Oct. 4 at Harding Stadium with four games.

It is the second year for the affair and breast cancer awareness fundraiser. Proceeds from the day will be donated to the T.E.A.R. (Trinity Emergency Assistance Relief) fund at Trinity’s Teramana Cancer Center.

The scheduled games are:

8 a.m. girls – Steubenville vs. Edison

10 a.m. boys – Indian Creek vs. Edison

Noon girls – Indian Creek vs. Catholic Central

2 p.m. boys – Steubenville vs. Catholic Central

Creek selling tickets

WINTERSVILLE – The Indian Creek Athletic Department will have pre-sale tickets for Friday’s football game at Brooke available for purchase from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Adult tickets are $5 and student are $3. All tickets at the gate are $5. Friday’s game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Oak Glen alumni weekend upcoming

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Oak Glen Alumni Association is planning its Alumni Weekend for Sept. 11-13.

An alumni volleyball game will take place on Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m., followed by an alumni football game and cheering event at 7 p.m.

The Golden Bears varsity football team hosts Indian Creek at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 with decade displays and hospitality room for alumni in the lower gym.

A school tour will conclude the weekend at 9 a.m. on Sept. 13, with a noon boys soccer game against Steubenville. At 8 p.m. an alumni social will be held at the Chester VFW.
