Brooke boys, Pepe garner first win
CALCUTTA – The Brooke boys soccer team earned its first win under new coach Joe Pepe with a 3-2 triumph over host Beaver Local Saturday afternoon.
Konner Govey collected the hat trick for the Bruins (1-2). Gavin Browne, Garrison Mathison and Chris Beaman had assists.
“The kids played really well, especially on such a hot day,” Pepe said. “I’m proud of the way we held on.”
All three Brooke goals came in the first half, while the Beavers scored both of their goals in the second half.
For the Bruins, Beaman made 14 saves in goal.
They return to action on Tuesday for their first home game against Fairmont Senior at 5:30 p.m.
In other boys soccer action, Harrison Central beat John Marshall, 7-0 and Oak Glen fell to Magnolia, 10-0.
Dons blank Silver Knights
WEIRTON – The Weirton Madonna girls soccer team scored early and often in a 10-0 victory over visiting Tyler Consolidated Saturday morning at the J.C. Williams Complex.
Hannah Bargar and Anna Westfall scored in the first three minutes. Both finished with a pair of goals and Rachel Grubbs added three.
Bargar, Grubbs and Gianna Antinone each collected a pair of assists. Abrianna Fuscardo also had a helper.
Antinone, Lea Colantonio and Miah LeFever finished the scoring.
Tessie Tokash had two saves and Kasey Canei one.
The Blue Dons will play in the Bishops Cup at 4 p.m. Friday against Huntington St. Joseph at Trace Fork Park in Charleston.
In other girls soccer action, Big Red beat Edison, 1-0; Magnolia shut out Harrison Central, 4-0 and Beaver Local topped Steubenville Catholic Central, 3-2.
Wildcats are swept
RICHMOND – The Edison volleyball team dropped a 25-21, 25-18, 25-12 decision to Beaver Local Saturday morning.
Caitlin Shannon totaled 14 assists, 10 points and five aces, Cassady Jarvis seven kills and five blocks and McKenzie Morrison five kills.
Kayleigh Westbrook added four points and three digs, Sarah Ross one kill, one block and five digs, Skylar Fankhauser five digs, Alison Crawford one point and one dig, Kayla Huff two kills and one assist, Tera Anderson four digs and one point and Sarah Anderson one kill.
For Beaver Local (3-2), Tannar Dolhun collected 10 points, three blocks and two kills, Camryn Jarrett two kills and two blocks, Sam Kendall four points, Ashlyn Milhoan seven points, five assists and three kills, Ashton Roberts four points, Lynsey Reckner 12 assists and four kills and Bobbie Ann Theiss eight points, four kills and four assists.
The Wildcats welcome St. Clairsville on Tuesday.
Oak Glen girls win Martins Ferry Invite
MARTINS FERRY – Oak Glen’s Felicity Nolder ran a 22:23 for a second-place finish at the Martins Ferry Invitational on Saturday. Her time helped propel the Golden Bears to a first place finish. The boys team placed second and was led by Tanner Gorby, who placed fourth with an 18:32.
Olivia Arneault placed third in the girls race with a 23:20, Toni Powell was seventh in 23:59, Emmy Severs placed 13th in 25:14, Tori Fryer placed 14th in 25:15, Briana Logston placed 27th in 28:03, Alyson Snow placed 29th in 29:06, Kaylee Coble placed 30th in 29:08 and Mackenzie Mayhew placed 42nd in 34:09.
Other boys included Hunter Gorby who placed 12th in 20:10, Matt McCune placed 13th in 20:16, Cody Warren placed 15th in 20:48, Dakota Graves placed 21st in 20:58, Connor Rosenlieb placed 33rd in 22:01, Jesse Lantz placed 39th in 23:09, Justin Gumm placed 44th in 23:50 and Shane Rhule placed 57th in 25:47.
