Big Red tops Potters

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville volleyball team opened its season with a 26-24, 25-21, 11-25, 20-25, 16-14 marathon victory over visiting East Liverpool on Monday inside the Crimson Center. It was the opener for both teams.

Taylor Young paced Steubenville with seven points, 12 kills, four digs and 12 assists. Rhiannon Petrisko totaled eight points, five kills, four digs and one block. Annie Nehrbas finished with eight points, four kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Tenia Barker had eight points, four kills and six digs

Lysaih Rice contributed four kills and four blocks; Carlee Jenkins five points, three kills and four blocks; Lexie Biasi had two points and five assists; Izzie Biasi 10 digs; and T’Shai Smith five points and 10 assists.

Big Red welcomes Edison at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Crusaders defeat Redskins

UNIONPORT – Austin Meronoff shot 39 to take medalist honors Monday as the Catholic Central golf team defeated Indian Creek, 176-192, at Red Oaks Golf Course.

Nick Ivkovich shot 45 and Matt Fischer and Kevin Wells each shot 46 for the Crusaders.

For the Redskins, Aaron Foldi fired a 44. Justin Dailey shot 47, Chris Riffee 50 and Tanner Thermes 51.

Red Knights Stop Edison

TORONTO – The Toronto golf team beat Edison, 186-192, Monday at Dyer Country Club. The Red Knights’ Will Newbold and the Wildcats’ Austin Horan each shot 44 to share medalist honors.

For Toronto, Sante Carducci shot 45, Noah Smith 48 and Riley Keirsey 49.

For Edison, Mason Allese had a 48, Josh Defrank a 49 and Jayce Robinson a 51.

Big Red beats Panthers

RAYLAND – Kasey Peterson was the medalist with his 40 as Steubenville Big Red shot 199 at Bec-Wood Golf Course on Monday to beat Buckeye Local.

Isaiah Lee shot 49, Isaiah Herring 51 and Deshaun Smith a 59 for Steubenville.

The Panthers had two golfers as Austin Anderson shot 48 and Jake Savage a 59.

Bears down American Spirit

EAST LIVERPOOL – Haley Spurlock earned medalist honors with a 49 Monday at Cedar Hills Golf Club as Oak Glen defeated American Spirit Academy, 205-250.

Trey Reese shot 50, Mike Watkins 51 and Jayson Chappell 55 for the Golden Bears.

Matt Brophy carded a 50 for the Warriors.

Rockets stop Huskies

CADIZ – The Connotton Valley volleyball team beat Harrison Central 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 on Monday.

For the Huskies, Tirzah Curry totaled 13 digs. Kaylee Toland had 11 points, five kills, three blocks and two digs and Lyndsey Hennis had seven digs, five points and two kills.

Dons down Maroon Knights

WHEELING – Nick Mazur was the medalist with his 73 Monday on the Jones Course at Oglebay Park as the Madonna golf team downed Wheeling Central, 316-390.

Howie Peterson carded a 78, Hunter Payne an 82 and Matthew Lyons an 83 for the Blue Dons.

Sean McFarland led the Maroon Knights with an 83. Jaren Straughn shot 96, Steven Corder a 101 and Jimmy Yost a 110.

Potters edge Big Red

EAST LIVERPOOL – Klayton Kosek scored twice as the East Liverpool boys soccer team defeated visiting Steubenville, 3-2, on Monday in the season opener for both teams.

Big Red will host Edison at 5 p.m. Aug. 26.

Briar Meek added the Potters’ other goals. Nykolas Pelley had an assist and Zack Adkins totaled nine saves.

Jason Criss tallied both goals for Steubenville. Adam DiCarlo and Jorge Dominguez registered the assists. Tyler Clevenger stopped seven shots.

Big Red finished with 22 shots, 10 more than the Potters.
