Solid performances by locals at state championship

CHARLESTON – Emotions were on a rollercoaster during the annual West Virginia State Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at the University of Charleston’s Laidley Field.

Along with winning a state title came near misses, too many false starts to count and countless other solid performances.

Madonna claimed two state championships.

Gianna Anile, Chloe Conner, Cameron Dowiak and Emilie Pollard defended its title in the 4×400 (4:15.49) and set a state meet record in doing so.

Marcello Biondillo won the long jump at 20-7.

Finishing in the top six and earning medals were:


Chantelle Harper, fifth, 400 (1:02.29) from slow heat

Francesca Farren, Harper, Alyssa Shingle, Kylee Leathers fifth in 4×100 (52.55) and 4×200 (1:52.57).

Stephanie Pennacchio, Alesia LeSane, Farren and Harper third in 4×400 (4:19.3).

Donovan Spencer third in 100 (11.1996).

JoJo Rice fourth in 100 (11.2057) and fifth in 200 (23.13).

Cole Slates third in 200 (23.06) and 400 (51.38).

Rice, Slates, Spencer and Clarence Bennett second in 4×100 (43.72).

Bennett, Alex Hannah, Rice and Slates fifth in 4×200 (1:32.95).


Chris Burnham sixth in 300 hurdles (41.52).

Micah Swiger, Chris Bailey, David Campbell and Dakota Price fourth in 4×100 (44.38).

Burnham, Bailey, Swiger and Campbell fourth in 4×200 (1:32.79).

Cody Tropeck, Burnham, Bailey and Campbell fourth in 4×400 (3:35.02).

Tropeck, Cyle Perez, Zach Mynes and Brock Smith sixth in 4×800 (8:29.92).

Noah Mills fifth in discus (138-1).


Gavin Lewis was fourth in 100 (11.24). The three finishers above him were seniors.

Nigel Bowland, Derek Jenkins, Jeremy Bosick and Lewis sixth in 4×100 (44.51).


Conner second in 400 (1:01.52).

Molly Pavan, Lea Colantonio, Gianna Anile and Conner sixth in 4×200 (1:46.95).

Hannah Barger, Gabriella Anile, Tessie Tokash and Dominique Brown fourth in shuttles (1:10.62).

Barger, Gabrielle Kotten, Dowiak and Pollard sixth in 4×800 (10:40.88).

Richard Daddario, Tavon Jeter, Levi Shrvee and Marquise Jeter third in 4×200 (1:35.44) and fourth in 4×100 (45.83).

Marquise Jeter fifth in 200 (23.63).
