Attractions at Seven Springs Resort

Located in the scenic Laurel Highlands of Somerset County, Seven Springs Golf Course is just one of the many attractions located at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

The course takes particular advantage of surrounding mountain vistas and is well known as one of the most picturesque in western Pennsylvania.

The Seven Springs golf course was built in 1969 as part of the growing portfolio of attractions at this mountain resort. Course design and construction was supervised by an architect with one of the best names in the business – Xenophon G. Hassenplug.

Hassenplug was on hand during the opening of the first nine holes in 1969. Construction continued on the second nine, which was eventually ready for play by the following year.

Current assistant pro Dennis Sprock grew up in the area and began working at the club shortly after it opened.

“When I was still in high school, my dad would drop me off at the course, and I would help pick the range,” Sprock said. “The course has seen just a few basic changes over the years. Several holes have been lengthened, and the contours on three of the greens have been improved.”

This mature, highly-rated course is now just one of many activities available at a resort that features winter skiing, summer tubing, alpine slides, hiking and zip-lines. The golf course receives most of its play from guests of the resort who are typically offered preferred rates, but it is also open for public play.

Director of golf Dave Flockvich has been at Seven Springs for the past two decades. The 41-year-old Connellsville native began working at the resort in the early 1990s, before assuming the role of assistant golf pro in 2000. In 2005 he was promoted to the club’s top spot.

“Seven Springs is a scenic, championship caliber golf course,” Flockvich said. “Our golf course staff does a great job maintaining this course. In fact, despite a long, cold winter, our course is in absolutely great condition.”

In addition to resort play, public golfers and a strong membership base, the course also hosts a considerable amount of corporate events throughout the summer months. An additional signature tournament is the annual Seven Springs Open a Tri-State PGA event held annually in mid-August.

The Seven Springs course is set up to appeal to a variety of golfers, with several sets of tee markers. From the “tips,” the course plays to par 71 at 6,560 yards.

In September 2013, owners of the Seven Springs Mountain Resort, the Nutting family (which also owns the Pittsburgh Pirates and a newspaper chain, including the Altoona Mirror) purchased nearby Hidden Valley Resort. The acquisition included Hidden Valley Golf Club, which is now marketed in conjunction with Seven Springs Golf Course. A variety of golf packages are now available for golfers interested in playing both resort courses.
