WELLSBURG – Brette Geary’s sixth-inning home run wasn’t enough to lift the Brooke softball team past Oak Glen in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.
But it might have just been the spark the Bruins’ offense needed to run away with a win in Game 2.
Brooke topped the Golden Bears, 11-2, in the nightcap after falling, 3-2.
“We haven’t played a lot of games, but the games we have played we’ve been hitting the ball real well and we haven’t been striking out a lot,” said Bruins coach Mike Wagner. “Their pitcher did a real good job of holding us in Game 1.”
Freshmen Hanna Clunk was cruising on the mound for Oak Glen.
She recorded seven strikeouts and just four hits before the sixth inning. Sabrina Duffy, the second batter of the inning, reached on an infield single before Geary ripped the homer over the left field fence.
After a single to start the seventh, Clunk retired the next three batters she faced to end the game.
The Bruins, now 5-2, stranded 12 runners on base in the first game.
“When we were able to get girls on, we had a hard time finding that key hit to bring them in,” Wagner said. “A timely hit or there, maybe things are different.”
Clunk worked her way out of jams with two runners on in the first, second, third and fourth innings. She avoided further trouble when the bases were loaded in the fifth inning.
“We pride ourselves on getting out of jams,” said Oak Glen coach Morgan Martin. “Pitching-staff wise, we’re very lucky to have three talented pitchers.”
Maryasa Duarte started Game 2 for the Golden Bears, now 8-3. The Bruins got to her early, though, with three hits and six runs. However, there were three infield errors that doomed Duarte and the Bears.
“We made some fatal mistakes,” Martin said.
Duarte was relieved by Logan Andrews, who finished the game with a pair of strikeouts.
Geary reached on a single in the first inning and had a double in the sixth and seventh innings.
“Brette got a hold of a few,” Martin said. “She probably hit those doubles even harder than the home run.”
Brooke pitcher Kaylee Kuchinski allowed a first-inning home run to Mykelti McGaffic, but retired the 10 of the next 12 batters.
“She’s a very capable pitcher,” Martin said. “She’s seen a lot of varsity action, being a senior. We’re very confident any time she’s on the mound.”
McGaffic had a fifth inning double in the fifth inning for Oak Glen. Erin Fields laced a triple and scored in the frame, as well.
Taylor Simali had three singles and four RBIs for Brooke. Geary, Duffy and Kelly Schambach also drove in runs.
This was the third doubleheader for Brooke. It swept both Parkersburg South and East Richland Christian. The Bruins play at Edison today.
Tuesday was the Golden Bears’ second doubleheader as it swept Linsly earlier in the season.
Oak Glen plays at Madonna today.
