Morgantown leads girls OVAC tennis
WHEELING – Morgantown High School leads after the first day of the OVAC Girls Tennis Championships.
It scored 11 points on Tuesday at the Wheeling Park Bubble, leading city rival University by three points.
The Mohigans won two of the three doubles finals Tuesday as Abby Rosiello and Lexie Rosiello defeated Jackie McDermott and Amika Ekanem (Linsly), 8-4, at No. 1 and Michelle Joseph and Demi Derrico beat Marissa Tordella and Abby Woods (John Marshall), 8-2, at No. 3.
Morgantown also had a finalist at No. 2 where University’s Brooke Franklin and Cassidy Seamon stopped Sydney Kacik and Lily McKnight (Morgantown), 8-1.
Four local doubles teams made it to the quarterfinals at No. 3 doubles.
Oak Glen’s Molly Swartzmiller and Kayla Strong defeated Indian Creek’s Morgan Evans and Shelby Dye, 8-2, before losing to Linsly’s Skylar Page and Megan McCluskey, 8-3.
Madonna’s Eva Bowser and Annie Frankovitch lost their quarterfinal match to Tordella and Woods, 8-4.
Weir’s Christine Robinson and Hannah Hinerman edged Angelle Collins and Paige Foltin of St. Clairsville, 8-6, before dropping an 8-1 decision to Joseph and Derrico.
Brooke’s Jessie Wayne and Sydney Stewart downed Breanna Cox and Molly Fryman of Parkersburg South, 8-5, before losing to University’s Wirth and Phillips, 8-3.
Three local teams made it to the quarterfinals at No. 2 doubles with one of them getting to the semifinals.
Weirton Madonna’s Morgan Duerr and Elizabeth Conforti dropped an 8-1 count to Kacik and McKnight after beating Weir’s Morgan Cassels and Mikayla Zias (8-1) and Brooke’s Katie Conaway and Maddie Marks (8-0).
Oak Glen’s Madison Hill and Katie Szymanski downed Indian Creek’s Deseree Taylor and Karli Celestin, 8-3.
The Golden Bears’ Haley Spurlock and Madison Juszczak dropped an 8-2 decision in the semifinals of No. 1 doubles to McDermott and Ekanem. They got an 8-4 win over Wheeling Central’s Joanna Capito and Maricris Pangilinan and an 8-0 victory over Brooke’s Lauren Shelton and Cassidy Brand.
Madonna’s Ali Welch and Christina Conforti lost 8-1 to McDermott and Ekanem after an 8-3 win over St. Clairsville’s Danielle DeNoble and Katelin Gandee.
Indian Creek’s Jessica Furda and Addie Windland and Weir’s Claudia Diaz and Barbara Suliminova lost in the first round.
Boys singles was played this morning and girls singles will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Matches are slated for West Liberty University, but will be moved to the bubble in case of rain.
Linsly has five points, Oak Glen four and John Marshall, Weirton Madonna and Parkersburg South with three points each. Wheeling Park has two points, and Brooke, Weir High and Wheeling Central with one point each.
