Central, Toronto, Big Red sweep twinbills

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville Catholic Central baseball team swept a doubleheader against Meadowbrook on Vaccaro Field Saturday.

The Crusaders topped the Colts 8-1 and 11-1.

In Game 1, Chris Murphy earned the win with seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out five. He also doubled and collected two singles.

Josh Merriman had two singles for Central, while Michael Barber, Brenton Colabella and Austin Oliver all had one.

Aleks Porreca struck out six batters over six innings to earn the win in Game 2. He also allowed just four hits.

At the plate, Porreca tallied two doubles and a single. Colabella collected three singles and Wes Householder doubled. Merriman, Luke Neary and Johnny DiCarlantonio all singled.

Clegg tosses no-hitter against Caldwell

TORONTO – In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Toronto’s Hank Clegg threw a five inning no-hitter against Toronto. Clegg struck out four batters in the 11-0 win. In Game 2, the Red Knights won, 9-2.

At the plate in Game 1, Danny Zdinak collected a pair of singles and a double while driving in two runs, Blaze Glenn reached base on three singles and drove in two runs and Will Newbold hit a two RBI double.

Blaine Rawson, Riley Kiersey and Ryan Cline each had RBI singles.

Logan Allen struck out six batters in five innings to win on the mound in Game 2. Chez Glenn sparked things at the plate with three doubles and an RBI.

Kiersey collected two RBIs on a single and Nate Stewart drove in a run with a double and single. Billy Solomon had two single with an RBI, while Ryan Cline brought home a run with a single.

The Red Knights, now 4-2, host Oak Glen on Monday.

Big Macs beat Brooke

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Brooke baseball team fell, 9-5, to Canon-McMillan on Saturday after a 2-run seventh inning rally fell short. The game was played at CONSOL Energy Field, home of the Frontier League Washington Wild Things.

Mario Lombardi took the loss on the mound for the Bruins (5-2) with one strikeout and three walks.

At the plate, Nick Ossman collected three singles with an RBI, Heath Hildreth had a pair of doubles with an RBI and Fargo Carmerlengo knocked an RBI double.

Aaron Walker added a triple for Brooke, which plays at Wheeling Park on Monday.

Big Red splits

WARSAW – The Big Red baseball team played two games against two different teams on Saturday. First, Steubenville topped River View, 9-4, in nine innings.

Niko Petrides sparked a seventh inning rally with a two RBI double to tie it at four. Big Red then exploded for five runs in the ninth to record the win.

Justin Corsi earned the win on the mound after relieving Anthony Zorne in the eigth inning. Zorne struck out 11 batters, while Corsi whiffed three.

At the plate, Dimitri Collaros collected two singles with a pair of RBIs, while Zorne singled, doubled and had two RBIs.

Devin Ferguson singled with an RBI, Brandon Jones singled and doubled and Bryan Pierro recorded an RBI.

Lakewood topped Steubenville, 8-4, in Game 2.

Corsi took the loss after striking out four and allowing five runs in six innings. Paul Runkel took over in the seventh and has two strikeouts. Jones, Corsi and Kai McClurg all singled for Big Red.

Steubenville will now play at St. Clairsville on Tuesday.

Big Red walks it off against Meadowbrook

STEUBENVILLE – Sierra Fields ripped a walk-off single to lift Steubenville over Meadowbrook, 6-5, in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Big Red won the second game, 4-0.

Carlee Jenkins pitched seven strong innings, striking out one, before Hayley Stamps relieved her. Stamps also fanned one batter.

Fields’ RBI hit came in the bottom of the ninth inning. Mytia Barker led the Big Red offensive with three hits.

In Game 2, Stamps pitched a complete game with four strikeouts. Barker contributed again with a pair of RBIs.

Oak Glen tops Knights

TORONTO – Logan Andrews homered to lead Oak Glen past Toronto, 7-0, on Saturday. Andrews also dazzled on the mound with seven strikeouts in five innings, allowing just one hit. Emilee Phillips singled and doubled for the Golden Bears, who tallied seven hits.

Chelsea Anderson picked up the lone hit for Toronto.

Madonna boys beat Cambridge

WHEELING – The Madonna boys tennis team beat Cambridge, 5-2, on Saturday at Linsly.

Matt Conforti (8-4), Thomas Gianni (8-4) and Cole Roberts (8-5) earned singles wins for the Blue Dons.

Conforti and Gianni also earned an 8-0 win in doubles play. Roberts and Ryan Watts earned an 8-4 doubles win.

Madonna girls beat St. C

WEIRTON – The Madonna girls tennis team beat St. Clairsville, 6-1, on Saturday.

Ali Welch (8-2), Elizabeth Conforti (8-1) and Emily Fournier (9-7) earned singles wins for the Blue Dons.

Welch and Christina Conforti beat Danielle DeNoble and Katelyn Gandee, 8-6, in doubles. Elizabeth Conforti and Bailey Roberts earned an 8-3 doubles win over Alexa Clark and Paige Bennett. Finally, Eva Bowser and Annie Frankovitch beat Angie Collins and Paige Foltin, 8-4.
