Big Red rebounds with win over Weir

WEIRTON – The Steubenville softball team stopped its six-game slide with a 14-2 victory over host Weir High on Monday. It came hours after a 6-4 loss to rival Steubenville Catholic Central at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

“Any time you can get a bunch of people at-bats is not a bad thing,” Big Red coach Guz DiMarzio said. “To see a smiles on their faces does a team good, especially after you’ve lost six in a row.

“In those six losses, we just played miserably. We needed to get back to the basics, to feel good about ourselves. But, in order to go that, you have to play the game. And, we didn’t play for a couple of innings tonight.”

Big Red (11-7) scored four in the top of the second for a 5-0 lead.

The Red Riders (3-9) came back with two in the bottom of the third.

“It was good to see our kids get some hits in that inning,” said Weir coach Dave Hinerman. “We just have to do a better job getting out of innings. We can’t continue to allow good teams to have four, five and six outs an inning. And, Big Red’s a good team that is well coached.

“I thought Abby Pratt pitched really well. We just have to make the plays behind her.”

Pratt took the loss and Mariah Stevens came in to finish the game.

Junior Keasha Barz blasted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth for Steubenville. She also singled.

Mytia Barker singled three times, good for two RBIs. Tenia Barker collected two singles and a pair of RBIs. Sierra Fields drove in three runs on two singles. Abby Taylor doubled twice and singled for two RBIs. Carmie Biasi singled twice and Taylor Haney singled for a pair of RBIs.

“I’m proud of our kids,” said DiMarzio. We’ve come a long way and we have a long way to go. We have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out. We have some tough games again this week with Beaver Local Wednesday, Steubenville Central Thursday and Brooke on Saturday. It doesn’t get any easier.

“We coaches just have to keep the morale up and the kids will continue to fight to get better and get wins.”

Carlee Jenkins earned the win.

Pratt and Jillian Karavanic each singled for an RBI for the Red Riders. Brianna Rosnick doubled.

“We can’t get down 5-0,” said Hinerman. “Our kids will continue to fight and get better. We’re not down on our kids. We’ll get better. And, we’ll come back fighting tomorrow against Bishop Donahue.”
