Big Red holds off Creek comeback

MINGO JUNCTION – The Steubenville Big Red baseball team answered an Indian Creek rally with one of its own in a 14-7 victory over the Redskins Thursday at the John Muth Recreational Complex.

“We took advantage of all the opportunities they gave us, and they gave us some opportunities,” said veteran Big Red coach Fred Heatherington.

“We put ourselves in a hole early with five errors in the first three innings,” said Indian Creek coach Mike Cottis. “Our pitchers are rolling ground balls that are not turning into outs and it is just killing our pitchers.”

Big Red had a 5-1 lead after three and 8-1 after 4 innings.

The Redskins finished with five errors and walked six Steubenville batters.

Kai McClurg paced Steubenville with two singles, a double and a pair of RBIs.

“We didn’t hit the ball well early,” said Heatherington. “But, later in the game, we started hitting the ball hard for good base hits.”

Big Red totaled a dozen hits.

Niko Petrides and Lucas Herrington each collected two singles and an RBI. Anthony Zorne had a single and double and Dmitrti Collaros a single and RBI.

“It was a game of opportunities and we took advantage of them more than they did,” said Heatherington.

Indian Creek plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a game.

“We fought back, but it was too little too late,” said Cottis. “We are getting better looks at the plate, but we need to start living up to our potential in the field to give ourselves a chance to win.

“Until we start playing defense we will continue to struggle. Win or lose, our players have been busting their rears everyday and today we just didn’t hustle and get after it.”

Jimmy Bolyog paced Indian Creek’s nine-hit attack with a double, triple and RBI. Mike Freshwater added a single and two RBIs, Adam Freshwater and Dylan Whitakera single and RBI each and Cole Yeater a pair of base knocks.

Aaron Crawford took the loss. He pitched the first two and last two innings, striking out four and walking just as many.

Big Red answered Indian Creek’s six with a half-dozen of its own in the top of the sixth to put the game away.

“We hit the ball well in that inning,” said Heatherington.

Paul Runkel went the distance for Big Red, fanning three and walking a like number.

“Paul pitched a decent game,” said Heatherington. “He struggled in the one inning, but, after that, he settled back down.”

Indian Creek welcomes Edison at 5 p.m. today.

Steubenville hosts Harrison Central at 4 p.m. Saturday in an OVAC Class 4A semifinal game.
