Huge start leads Trinity to victory over Blue Dons

WEIRTON – The first quarter decided the game.

The Madonna girls’ basketball team was shut out in the first quarter Monday night as Trinity Christian traveled north and came away with a 51-24 victory inside the Bill Barrett Gymnasium.

“It was not good,” Madonna (8-6) head coach Don Ogden said. “It started out bad. We didn’t show up. It took us a while to get in gear. Morgantown is a good team. They took it to us.”

Trinity (8-4) has been playing good defense as of late. Saturday, the Warriors limited Wheeling Central to three points in the second quarter and just seven in the fourth quarter en route to a 51-36 victory over the state-ranked Maroon Knights.

Monday, the defense was even better.

The Warriors limited the Blue Dons to just six points in the first half as Trinity led by more than 20 points at halftime. Madonna outscored Trinity in the second half, but it was not enough.

“Once we got going, I thought we competed,” Ogden said. “Our deficit was just too much to overcome.”

Rachel Grubbs was the lone Blue Dons to score in double digits in the game. She finished with 11 points.

Madonna made just nine field goals in the game, and the Blue Dons also struggled at the free-throw line. Madonna made 14 of 30 from the charity stripe.

Two players scored in double digits for the Warriors. Jackie Halapy tallied a game-high 14 points, and Megan Myers scored 10 points.

“We knew what to expect,” Ogden said. “We didn’t do a good job of executing. It is as simple as that. Hopefully, it was just one of those nights.”

The game was a big one as far as the standings for OVAC Class 1A are concerned. The Blue Dons are ranked No. 2, while the Warriors are No. 3. Both teams have three games scheduled prior to Monday’s cutoff for the OVAC Tournament.

Madonna plays today at home against Clay-Battelle, Thursday at home against Linsly and then Monday at Toronto.

“We need to get off to better starts in our next few games,” Ogden said. “If not, we will have a similar outcome.”

Trinity’s next two games are against teams from Maryland – Thursday at home against Fort Hill and Saturday at Mount Ridge.
