Big Reds run by BL

BELLAIRE – Marci Quirk thinks her Bellaire Lady Reds can get on a winning streak down the stretch to build some momentum heading toward the sectional tournament.

Step one of the process came Thursday evening inside the House of Champions where the Lady Reds cruised past Buckeye Local, 69-41.

“This was a total effort,” Quirk said. “We played together and we played hard. It was fun to watch.”

Bellaire, which was balanced in the scoring column, was able to build a lead and then extend it further, which Quirk was especially pleased about.

“Our press looked good, we rotated well and overall I thought we played a great game,” Quirk said. “We were looking for each other offensively. Everyone contributed.”

After building a 17-11 lead after one, the Lady Reds seized total control.

Thanks to the work of Cari Crozier, the Lady Reds pushed the lead to 36-18 at the intermission. Crozier scored 11 of her team’s 19 in the second, which included an 11-0 run to open the quarter.

Buckeye Local, which played without the services of junior Lauren Swiger due to injury, scored the first bucket of the third quarter.

From there, however, Bellaire proceeded to score the next 17.

Junior Kierstyn Kidder, Crozier and sophomore Nina Crook all got into the act offensively.

The lead swelled to as many as 38 early in the fourth when Bellaire scored the first seven to begin that quarter.

The Big Reds were led by Crozier’s 22 points. Crook and Kidder went for 18 and 13, respectively.

Buckeye Local, which drops to 2-16, battled throughout, which didn’t surprise rookie head coach Tom Figurski.

“We put up 66 shots and only had 14 turnovers. How many girls teams would kill to put up that many shots have that few of turnovers?” Figurski said. “The story of our season has been we play well in spurts, but we have a letdown. There’s no quit in these girls, and I am proud of them for that.”

Buckeye Local was paced by sophomore Becky Zeroski’s nine points.
