Big Red defeats Potters

STEUBENVILLE – Wednesday night at the Crimson Center was a night of celebration for the Steubenville Big Red girls team as it cruised to a 26-point victory over East Liverpool.

It also included senior leader Emiley Masloski accomplishing a career milestone.

On a evening that saw Emiley Masloski surpass the 1,000-point plateau in the first quarter on one of sister Hannah Masloski’s five assists, Big Red jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 75-49 win over the Potters.

“It is special for Emiley to get her 1,000th point, especially coming back from injury like she has, but if you’d ask her she’s more happy about the win,” said Big Red head coach Phil Casinelli.

“It was really nice to see Hannah get the assist on the basket. Emiley is a great teammate and all the girls are happy she reached it, but for her it is more about the team getting the win. That’s just the type of kid and player she is.”

Unfortunately for East Liverpool, it had more to worry about than just Emiley Masloski’s 23-point, five three-pointer performance as Mytia Barker and Lysiah Rice scored 24 and 20 points respectively. Barker and Rice each added eight rebounds while Rice was a force on the defensive end as well with six steals.

“That’s the type of thing we’ve come to expect from Lysiah,” said Casinelli. “She is a great player and then you add Mytia scoring over 20 as well. We created a lot of offense off of our defense. It set the tone early and when those three are playing that well and our defense is tough that’s how we end up scoring over 70.”

The first quarter set the tone for the night as Big Red’s 9-0 opening run led to a 23-5 advantage after the first eight minutes. Emiley Masloski had 10 points in the frame to lead the way.

“We got off to a slow start and just couldn’t climb back out of the hole,” said East Liverpool head coach Allan Dingey. “We had trouble against the fast break. We were able to get back to defend the paint, but we didn’t get out on their shooters.”

Big Red outscored the visitors 39-27 during the middle two quarters to push the lead to 62-32 heading into the final quarter. Over that span Barker scored 13 points, Emiley Masloski 12, and Rice 10.

East Liverpool played a solid fourth quarter, outscoring Big Red 17-13. Rae Ana Holmes scored nine of her 11 points in the quarter with Nikayla Edgell scoring four of her team-high 19 points.

“We never quit,” said Dingey. “We started playing better later in the game after starting poorly. I’m proud of the girls for the way they kept playing hard. There’s a reason Steubenville is undefeated. They’re a very good team. I’m proud of they way we kept playing hard though.”

Edgell added five assists and four rebounds in the game with Kiara Cowart leading all players with 12 rebounds to go with six points. Holmes pulled down six rebounds.

Big Red (15-0) travel to Martins Ferry Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip off.
