West Virginia completes OVAC roster

WHEELING – Mike Young is well aware that his defensive backfield will be challenged in the OVAC All-Star Charity Football Classic, one week from today at Wheeling Island Stadium.

However, he really likes his defensive back options as well.

Young and the rest of the Mountaineer squad report to camp this afternoon at Bethany College to begin their week-long preparation for the game.

Young and his staff from Wheeling Central named their defensive backfield options.

“We feel we should be able to cover well,” Young said. “We know (Matt) Kinnick is a threat and we know how many quality athletes Ohio has. We’ll have to be able to read our keys and take away the deep ball and easy passes.”

Here’s a capsule look at the players:

DARREN BALDWIN, Weir – This former Red Rider was impressive all season for coach Tony Filbeto’s squad.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pounder saw time at fullback and tight end on offense and as a linebacker on the defensive side of the ball.

Baldwin was a second-team all-state selection after twice being named honorable mention.

The son of Lisa Morris plans to attend West Virginia Northern Community College.

LOGAN COX, Parkersburg South – This former Patriot was a mainstay in the defensive backfield for coach Jon Bolen’s squad.

The 6-3, 205-pounder was a safety and had 88 tackles and five interceptions. On the offensive side, Cox ran for 702 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 12 balls for 201 yards.

Cox was recognized for his efforts twice as a first-team all-stater. He was also a two-time all-OVAC and all-TRAC pick.

Along with football, Cox was active in basketball and track. He’s also a standout in the classroom. He’s a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and Academic Advisory Committee.

The son of Michael and Laura Cox plans to attend the University of Charleston.

BRAXTON JOHNSON, Parkersburg South – This former Patriot was a two-way ace for Bolen’s squad.

Seeing time at slot back and corner, Johnson accounted for 11 touchdowns this past season. For his efforts, Johnson was named first-team all-OVAC and special mention all-state.

The son of Kim and J. McLain plans to attend Alderson-Broaddus.

CHRIS VARNER, Hundred – This former Hornet had a most impressive senior season for coach Rex Rush’s squad.

The 5-9, 130-pounder ran for 1,539 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, including a single-game high of 288 yards. He also scored six touchdowns in one game. All told, he averaged 9 yards per carry.

Varner was a first-team all-OVAC and all-Mason Dixon pick. He was also named honorable mention all-state.

Along with football, Varner is a member of the student council, FFA and strength and conditioning club.

The son of Delmas and Debra Varner plans to attend Fairmont State.
