Mountaineers go 1-0-1 at OVAC soccer games

STEUBENVILLE – The 17th-annual Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Senior All-Star Soccer Classic was played Sunday afternoon at Harding Stadium and the West Virginia teams finished 1-0-1.

The Mountaineers earned a 3-0 win in the girls game and the boys tied 3-3 in a contest which four goals were scored in 11 minutes.

Wheeling Park’s Meghan Horan and Wheeling Central’s Beth Stayduhar scored in the first half for a 2-0 lead.

The Maroon Knights’ Mary Stahl made it 3-0 early in the second half and West Virginia’s defense, backed by Weirton Madonna goalkeeper Amy Davis, kept the shutout.

Wheeling Park’s Ashley Grove was selected the Mountaineers’ offensive MVP and Trinity Christian’s Katie Kenney the defensive MVP.

St. Clairsville’s Falon Weidman was chosen Ohio’s offensive MVP and Cambridge goalkeeper Liz Mitchell the defensive MVP.

In the boys game, Linsly’s Jamaal Ebanks put West Virginia on the board early, at the 36:36 mark.

Ohio’s defense stiffened and the Buckeyes eventually tied it 2:45 before the half on a shot off the right foot of Steubenville’s Brandon Llewellyn. Indian Creek’s Ian Gambill shot was cleared by the West Virginia defense, but right to Llewellyn’s foot and he found the back of the net.

Cambridge’s Seth Warden laser off his left foot from the 25-yard line put Ohio on top 2-1 with 31:12 showing.

The Mountaineers tied it up 2:04 later thanks to Weir High’s Kenny Muhart off a brilliant feed from Red Riders teammate Shane Davis.

Morgantown’s David Minehart gave West Virginia a 3-2 edge at the 21:14 mark.

Steubenville Catholic Central’s Cuyler Ledyard tied it back up 59 seconds later off a rocket from his left foot.

The defenses owned the rest of the game, although Ohio goalie Kevin Bankes (East Liverpool) and West Virginia keeper Alex Pancake (Magnolia) still had to work to keep the other squad off the board.

Magnolia’s Pancake, who had never played goalie before, was West Virginia’s defensive MVP.

Parkersburg South’s Juan Cardenas was selected the Mountaineers’ offensive MVP.

Ohio’s offensive MVP went to Warden and defensive MVP to East Liverpool’s Andrew Connor.
