Creek tops Huskies to win Buckeye 8 softball title

WINTERSVILLE – The Indian Creek softball team claimed the Buckeye 8 crown Thursday with a 2-0 win over Harrison Central. The win moved the Redskins (16-3) to 6-1 in the Buckeye 8 while dropping Harrison Central (16-8) to 5-2 in the conference.

The Redskins picked up both runs in the bottom of the fourth. Winning pitcher Paige Geanangel led the frame off with a single. Paige DeMattio then drove in Geanangel’s courtesy runner, Hannah Webb, with a double and moved to third on the throw home to get Webb. Abby Orr then placed a perfect squeeze bunt down to bring DeMattio across for the 2-0 lead.

Geanangel was dominant in the circle, striking out 10 Huskies and surrendering just two hits. She added a double at the plate to go with her fourth inning single. Alexis Monroe also had a double and Bethany Davis added a single.

“Geanangel picked up her 16th win with a solid team defense behind her,” said Indian Creek head coach Angie Penner. “Our seniors have displayed confidence and mental toughness all season which has led our team. We’re having success this year because of good players, good coaches, supporting parents, and a supportive administration.”

Katie Ellzy was strong in the loss with a seven walk, five-hit effort. Shiane Nameth had a double and Kara Dunfee had a single for the Huskies lone hits.

Toronto falls to St. John

TORONTO – The Toronto softball team fell 14-2 to St. John Central Thursday.

Chelsea Anderson had a double for the Red Knights with Shane Sears, Cari Horne, Lexie Berger and Carley Cooper each adding a single.

Hannah Absalom struck out 10 over seven innings of work and had a double at the plate for the Irish.

Toronto (14-7) starts sectional play Saturday at 2:30 p.m. when it faces Bridgeport at Shadyside.

Edison edges Claymont

RICHMOND – The Edison softball team defeated Claymont, 3-2, on a Jackie Wiedaman RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Zoe Westfall was the winning pitcher, striking out six, walking none and giving up just four hits. Molly McCoy had a single and hit a home run with Caitlin Brenstuhl adding a single and a double.

Edison (17-9) begins sectional play Monday against Buckeye Local.

Big Red stops Potters

EAST LIVERPOOL – The Big Red softball team swung big bats Thursday, collecting 13 hits on its way to a 14-5 victory over East Liverpool.

Six Big Red batters collected two hits with Abby Taylor connecting for a triple and a single with Brooke Carroll adding two doubles, Christina Archer adding a single and a double and Tenia Barker, Carmie Biasi and Brittany Bodo each adding two singles. Lauren Gray had a single to make the hit total 13. Hannah Westlake was the winning pitcher with Anna Perrino taking over in the fifth in relief.

Wildcats stop Shamrocks

RICHMOND – The Edison baseball team defeated Barnesville 6-2 Thursday on the power of four runs in the bottom of the sixth that broke open a 2-2 tie.

Chance Wilkin had three singles and three RBIs while Dylan Glasure added two singles and drove in a pair of runs. Alec Jones had a single and a double with Josh Pasek adding a double, and Dylan Jones drove in a run. Tanner Evans, who relieved starter Nolan Marcus in the top of the sixth, picked up the win.

Edison (20-3) hosts Steubenville Big Red today.

Panthers blast Tigers

SHADYSIDE – The Buckeye Local baseball team rolled to a 13-0 victory over Shadyside in six innings Thursday.

Jonathan Borkoski was the winning pitcher for the Panthers, surrendering just four hits. Josh Figurski had two singles, a double and drove in four runs. Jonathan Roth added two singles and a pair of RBIs with Austin Marshall connecting for two single and an RBI and Brian Zeroski adding two singles as well. Josh Sokolowski had a single and drove in a run.

Buckeye Local (11-3) hosts Indian Creek today.

Redskins top Huskies

MINGO JUNCTION – The Indian Creek baseball team rolled to a 12-4 victory.

Holding a 5-4 advantage entering the bottom of the sixth, the Redskins proceeded to put up seven runs on the Huskies to end any doubt. Tanner Wise, who entered in the second frame, was awarded the victory. Jonathan Woodbury led the Redskins at the plate with two singles, a double and three RBIs. Dustin Rath added a pair of singles and drove in two runs with Wise chipping in with a single and two RBIs.

Drew Horn had three singles and an RBI for the Huskies with Rashaen Mitchell adding two singles and an RBI.

Indian Creek travels to Buckeye Local today.

MORRISTOWN – The Steubenivlle Catholic Central baseball team tied Union Local 11-11 in a game called on account of darkness.

The Crusaders received a single, triple and two RBIs from Brenton Colabella with Joe DeFallo adding a single, double and an RBI. Kyle Laukert, Mike DiAngelo and Aleks Porreca each had two singles, with Laukert and DiAngelo both driving in a run.

Big Red wins twice

STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red tennis team defeated Indian Creek 4-1 and Claymont 3-2 Thursday. Big Red finished the regular season 10-12, but closed out on a seven-match winning streak.

Shane Winland won the Redskins lone match with a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Steffano Lanni of Big Red in No. 1 singles. Anthony Craig claimed No. 2 singles for Big Red with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Jared Conn and Michael Rosachi won No. 3 singles by forfeit. Big Red’s Brandon Llewelyn and Mark Cole won No. 1 double, 6-2 and 7-5, over Fernando Prestes and Justin Caniff with teammate Jorge Dominguez and Annie Nehrbas defeating Caleb Smith and Brandon Hammack, 7-5 and 6-1, in No. 2 doubles. Lanni defeated Claymont;s Jared Wise in No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1. Rosachi won No. 2 singles, 6-3 and 6-2, over C.J. Jenkins while teammate Charlie Keenan beat Zach Dickey, 6-2 and 7-6 (8-6), in No. 3 singles. Big Red dropped both doubles matches with Craig and Dominguez falling to Blake Albaugh and Keenan Kadri, 6-2 and 6-4, and Blake Mullen and Dom DiCarlo losing, 6-4 and 6-3, to Skyler Smala and Garrett Lewis.

Big Red is in sectional action Monday at Dover.
