CCHS edges Devils
BRIDGEPPORT – Runs were at a premium Tuesday night in the Division IV sectional at the Niekro Diamond at Perkins Field.
Second-seeded Steubenville Central survived a scare from eighth-seeded Beallsville in the opener with a 2-1 victory in eight innings. Meanwhile in the second game, third-seeded Shadyside did all of its damage in one inning en route to a 4-0 win over River.
The Tigers will return to Niekro Diamond tonight to face top-seeded Toronto with a 7 p.m. first pitch. Steubenville Central will await the winner of tonight’s Bridgeport-Frontier 4:30 p.m. contest. The Crusaders and the survivor will meet Thursday with a 6 p.m. start.
Steubenville Central was pushed to the limit before dispatching Beallsville.
The Crusaders’ Aleks Porreca and the Devils’ Logan Nippert were locked in a pitchers’ duel until Kyle Laukert’s infield chopper scored Stone Romano with the game-winner.
Porreca went 7 innings with six strikeouts before being relieved by Chris Murphy, who picked up the win by recording the final two outs in the eighth.
Nippert was outstanding in defeat. He scattered six hits while fanning 10 and walking three.
Beallsville had runners on second and third in the top of the fourth, but the Blue Devils had a base running blunder that helped the Crusaders turn a triple play.
Steubenville Central scored the game’s first run in its half of the fourth as Laukert singled in a run to make it 1-0.
Beallsville responded in the top of the sixth when Chase Mercer stole third and trotted home when the throw rolled into left field.
Romano opened the eighth with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. Nippert fought back with a pair of strikeouts, but Laukert’s chopper was misplayed for the winning run.
Shadyside received a sterling effort from Austin Dorris, who went the distance, in pitching the Tigers to the victory. The big righty scattered three hits, while finishing with eight strikeouts and four free passes.
River got an equally solid performance from Cody Caldwell. The senior allowed just four hits, while fanning seven and walking five. All four runs were unearned.
Shadyside did all of its damage in the second inning.
Jered Brooks started things with a free pass, stole second and moved to third on a fly ball out. With two outs and two on, Luke Nardo’s fly to left was misplayed allowing Shadyside to score a pair.
Senior Chase Kinemond followed a single to center to score Nardo. Kinemond stole second and scored on Adam Stupak base knock to right center.
