Red Riders, Panthers split doubleheader

WEIRTON – The Weir High and Buckeye Local baseball teams combined for 31 runs, 35 hits and 15 errors in a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at Bowman Field.

The Red Riders scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 9-7 Game 1 win and the Panthers turned it around to scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh for a 9-6 Game 2 triumph.

Weir’s Matt Cessna earned the win in relief of Zach Knuutila. Cessna also jacked one out of the park and totaled three RBIs. Mitch Viakley, Michael Curtis and Josh Russell each singled and drove in a pair of runs.

Austin Marshall doubled, singled and drove in two runs for the Panthers. Eric Banal added a double, single and RBI, while Brian Zeroski, Eric Williams and Jonathan Roth each had a single and RBI.

The Red Riders scored three times in the bottom of the first in the second game. Buckeye Local came back for a 4-3 lead after 4 innings when Weir put up two in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-4 lead.

Marshall had two singles, a triple and three RBIs as he earned the win, going the distance with three strikeouts and two walks.

Banal added three singles and an RBI, Jonathan Borkoski two singles and an RBI, Duncan a single and double and Chase Hopkins a double and RBI.

Kamari Washington doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs for the Red Riders. Russell tripled and Curtis singled and had two RBIs.

Buckeye Local hosts Edison Monday. Weir visits Indian Creek at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Big Red loses twice

HEBRON – The Steubenville Big Red baseball team lost a doubleheader Saturday in similar fashion.

Hebron Lakewood scored in the bottom of the seventh to beat Big Red, 7-6, and River View scored in the bottom of the seventh for a 13-12 win at Hebron Lakewood.

Bryian Pierro and Matt Petrella each had two singles and two RBIs in the first game. Justin Corsi took the loss with 10 strikeouts and five walks.

Lakewood executed a bases-loaded suicide squeeze for the win.

River View held an 11-5 lead after five innings in Game 2, but Big Red scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie it at 12 before River View earned the win.

Pat Pizzeferrato totaled a double and four RBIs. Petrella added a single and two RBIs and John Linn three singles and an RBI.

Steubenville visits St. Clairsville on Tuesday.

Redskins sweep Beaver Local

MINGO JUNCTION – The Indian Creek baseball team evened its record at 3-3 with an easy doubleheader sweep of visiting Beaver Local at Muth Field Saturday, 22-1 and 14-1.

The Redskins host Martins Ferry on Monday.

Nate Beatty collected three RBIs in Game 1 with a double. Tanner Wise added a single and double and two RBIs and Jonathan Woodbury a single and two RBIs.

Jimmy Bolyog added a single and double and Cole Yeater, the winning pitcher, collected a single and a pair of RBIs. Sean Smith had a single and double and Chris Mazar a double and RBI.

In Game 2, winning pitcher Zach Williams delivered a single, double and two RBIs. Anthony Young added a single and two RBIs, Dustin Rath a triple and two RBIs and Justin Aceto a single and RBI.

Crusaders sweep Seminoles

STEUBENVILLE – Steubenville Catholic Central swept Monroe Central, 6-1 and 12-2 Saturday at Vaccaro Field.

Aleks Porreca picked up the Game 1 victory, striking out six. Brenton Colabella hit a triple and a single in the win with Stone Romano and Josh Merriman each collecting a double.

Joe DeFallo was the Game 2 winner with Jack Reed throwing a scoreless fifth in relief. Colabella and Romano each hit a double and a single with Kyle Laukert and Johnny DiCarlantonio adding a pair of singles each.

Huskies remain undefeated

NEWCOMERSTOWN – Harrison Central swept host Newcomerstown 10-2 and 12-1 Saturday to move its record to 8-0.

Dalton Rutter collected three singles to lead the nine-hit attack in Game 1. Drew Horn and Nick Pelegreen each singled twice and Rashaen Mitchell tripled and singled to help Ryan Rose earn the win on the hill. He fanned three and walked two.

The Huskies trailed 1-0 after four innings in Game 2, then erupted for 12 runs in the next three innings.

Mitchell singled three times and Rose and Rhett Kuryn singled twice as Dustin Redish earned the win. He fanned four and walked two.

Edison wins a pair

CARROLLTON – Edison dispatched United 15-4 in 4 innings before turning around and handing host Carrollton a 10-8 loss in eight innings Saturday.

Clay Woodward earned the win on the mound for the Wildcats against United. Austin Horan and Nolan Marcus each had a double with Horan driving in three runs and Marcus a pair. Brian Straka had three singles and an RBI; Chance Wilkin had a double, single, and an RBI; Storm Allese had two singles and two RBIs; Alec Jones had two singles and an RBI; and Dylan Glasure had a pair of RBIs.

Horan was awarded the win in Game 2 against Carrollton, coming on in the fourth in relief and striking out three. Marcus collected four singels and drove in three runs with Wilkin and Straka both adding a single and a double. Straka had two RBIs and Wilkin drove in one run.

Bruins win first two

WELLSBURG – Brooke got into the wins column Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Wheeling Central, 11-1 and 10-0. Both games went five innings.

Alec Buchmelter singled and drove in two runs in both games.

Russell Schwertfeger singled, doubled and tripled in Game 1. Austin Schambach, who earned the mound win, tripled and singled. Heath Hildreth singled twice and Chad Harper and Mario Lombardi singled and doubled.

Hunter Grishkevich took the Game 2 victory, striking out two. Schwertfeger singled and doubled and Hildreth doubled. Colin Moser doubled for an RBI and Harper and Evan Johnson singled for an RBI.

Big inning lifts Knights

TORONTO – The Red Knights scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 4-3 deficit into an 8-4 win over Lisbon David Anderson Saturday at the Knight Baseball Complex.

Toronto (7-0) hosts Oak Glen at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Tyler Owens, who got the win in relief of Logan Allen, Chez Glenn and Blaze Glenn each had a pair of singles.

Redskins beat Bobcats twice

WINTERSVILLE – The Indian Creek softball team swept a double header from Cambridge, 9-8 and 5-1, Saturday at Bantam Ridge.

Game 1 was an eight-inning victory the Redskins come from two down in the bottom of the eight to get the win.

Trailing 8-6 Brey Mays, who was 7 for 9 on the day, led the Redskins off with a double. Megan Markja singled her home and was then sent home on a Paige Geanangel double that tied the game. Paige DeMattio walked and eventually ended up on third off an Alexis Monroe fielder’s choice. Abby Orr then played hero with a one-out single that scored DeMattio for the win.

Mays had a single, two doubles, and a triple in the first game. Markja had a single and two doubles with Mallorie Sullivan going 4 for 4 with a quartet singles.

Mays stayed hot in the 5-1 Game 2 victory, smacking a pair of singles and a double. Marissa DeFallo added a two-RBI double.

Geanangel picked up wins five and six in the circle, striking out 12 over the two games.

Indian Creek (6-0) travels to John Marshall Tuesday.

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville Catholic Central softball team played unwelcoming hosts to Athens Saturday, sending the vistors home with two losses, 25-4 and 21-7, at Steve Zamana Field.

Tori Knight and Megan Lloyd each earned a win in the circle for the Crusaders. Taylor Clark carried the big bat, belting two singles, a double, three home runs and driving in 13 runs. Maddy Gulan had three singles, a double, two home runs, and seven RBIs. Micca Mirabella added five singles, a triple, and five RBIs with Sammi Giannamore chipping in five singles and four RBIs. Alex McComb had three singles, a home run, and two RBIs while Megan Lloyd had six singles and two RBIs.

Bruins blank Bears

WELLSBURG – Brooke held Oak Glen to five hits and zero runs in 12 innings for a Saturday doubleheader sweep, 6-0 and 12-0.

Meanwhile, the Bruins’ offense whipped out 24 hits in advancing their record to 5-3 and a Monday 5 p.m. doubleheader home date with John Marshall looming.

Abbie Carpenter doubled, singled and knocked in two runs in Game 1. Marena Cline added two singles and a pair of RBIs. Kristen Reardon earned the win and Katie Castellucci pitched the final inning.

Brette Geary was the Game 2 hitting star with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. Michaela Hinerman and Samantha Cusick singled twice. Isabella Preston collected two singles and an RBI and Kelly Schambach a single and two RBIs.

Panthers sweep Red Riders

WEIRTON – Buckeye Local took a doubleheader from host Weir High Saturday, 11-0 and 11-8.

Ivy Starcher earned both victories, the second coming in relief.

In Game 1, Starcher and Ashley Trouton combined to blank the host Riders. The Panthers’ duo totaled two strikeouts and one walk.

Kierstyn Czuchran singled and doubled for a run batted in. Taryn Tonkovich also singled and doubled, knocking in a pair. Kaylee DeCesare singled twice and accounted for three runs.

The Red Riders were limited to three hits.

Starcher came on in relief to earn the second game nod. She fanned seven and allowed three walks. Mlti-hit leaders for Buckeye included: Karlee Leonard (four singles); Aliyah Marelli (home run, triple); Rachel Zeroski (three singles); Taryn Tonkovich (three singles); Kierstin Czuchran (home run, two singles); Becky Zeroski (two singles).

Meikka Buffo had two singles for the Red Riders. Ashlynne Drizake added a pair of singles. Abby Pratt took the Game 1 loss and Micca DiBacco the Game 2 defeat.

Dons, Bishops split

WHEELING – Madonna and Bishop Donahue split its doubleheader Saturday at Ben’s Field at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Sports Complex.

The Bishops scored two in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh for a 5-4 win in Game 1 and the Blue Dons came back with three in the top of the ninth and held on for an 8-7 win in Game 2.

In the Game 1 loss Maddie Burchill had two singles and a double. Taylor Thompson hit two singles and drove in a pair of runs. Amanda Paul had a pair of singles with Courtney Kaczmarek driving in a run with a single.

Huskies take two

LISBON – Harrison Central won both games of a doubleheader against host Beaver Local Saturday, 16-6 and 11-1.

Katie Ellzy earned both wins, striking out 14 and walking two. The Huskies totaled 27 runs, 20 hits and eight errors.
