Dons, Bears win 3 of 4 on tennis courts
WEST LIBERTY – The Weirton Madonna tennis teams won three of their four matches Saturday at West Liberty University.
The boys earned 6-1 triumphs over east Fairmont and Fairmont Senior and the girls split, besting Fairmont Senior 7-0 and dropping a 5-2 decision to East Fairmont.
For the boys against Fairmont Senior, Nick Conforti, who earned an 8-3 decision over University’s Abe Valenzuela on Friday, downed Grant Hilbert 8-1, Matt Conforti beat Logan Orton 8-4 and Thomas Gianni blanked Trey Giorcelli 8-0. Fairmont’s Michael Buonaiuto beat Alan Alimario 8-3.
In doubles, Conforti and Conforti beat Hulbert and Orton 8-2, Alimario and Gianni defeated Buonaiuto and Giorcelli 8-6 and Dominic Clements and Dustin Parr beat Trevor DeVaul and Josh Rock 8-4.
Against East Fairmont, Nick Conforti cruised to an 8-0 win over Andrew Smallwood, Matt Conforti beat Brighton Knuce 8-3, Alimario defeated Ben Costello 8-5 and Gianni topped Michael Moore 8-1.
In doubles, Conforti and Conforti blanked Smallwood and Knuce 8-0, Alimario and Gianni bested Costello and Moore 8-3 and Jordan Leonard and Jason Mills took an 8-4 win over Clements and Parr.
For the Lady Blue Dons against Fairmont Senior, Amy Davis in singles and Annie Frankovitch and Eva Bowser in doubles won by forfeits.
In doubles, Ali Welch and Tina Conforti beat Megan Branch and Alissa Link 8-1 and Elizabeth Conforti and Morgan Duerr blanked Maya Mathai and Katlyn Wilt 8-0.
Welch beat Branch 8-1, Duerr topped Mathai 8-2 and Tina Conforti slipped past Link, 9-7, in the best match of the contest.
In the loss, Welch beat Skyler Morgan 8-3 and Duerr bested Brittiany Brumage 9-7.
Catherine Boyles defeated Davis 8-6 and Jacqueline Costello edged Tina Conforti 9-7.
In doubles, Boyles and Morgan earned a 7-5 decision in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 win over Welch and Conforti.
Costello and Brumage downed Elizabeth Conforti and Duerr 8-3 and Marcie Corder and Cara Laswell blanked Frankovitch and Bowser 8-0.
Bears take 3 of 4
BETHANY – The Oak Glen tennis teams won three of their four matches Saturday at Bethany College.
Lady Bears blanked St. Clairsville 7-0, and defeated Ravenswood 5-2.
The boys nipped Ravenswood 4-3 and dropped a 4-3 count to St. Clairsville.
Anna Crawford defeated Samantha Hodgson and Abbi Sayre beat Danielle DeNoble by 8-1 scores. Haley Spurlock topped Paige Dennis 8-4 and Madison Juszczak downed Katelin Gandee 8-3.
In doubles, Spurlock and Juszczak beat Dennis and Hodgson 8-3, Lauren Pizzurro and Madison Hill blanked Alexa Clark and Kelly Strama 8-0 and Crawford and Sayre won by forfeit.
Against Ravenswood, Spurlock (singles) and Crawford and Sayre (doubles) won via forfeit.
Sayre beat Bess McNabb and Juszczak downed Kerigan Crow by 8-2 counts. Taylor Youell beat Crawford 8-0.
Both doubles matches were 8-3 scores with Spurlock and Juszczak over Taylor and Bess and Jordan Danko and Jordan Matics over Pizzurro and Katelynn Smith.
In the St. Clairsville boys contest, the swing match eventually came down to St. Clairsville’s Caden Myers and Austin Douglas winning a 7-4 tiebreaker over Addison Sayre and Jake Beilhart for a 9-8 doubles triumph.
Also in doubles, Oak Glen’s Cullenn Bennett and Derek Chamberlain beat Chris Toohey and Chase Weithe 8-3 and the Red Devils’ Alexander Trouten and Chris Baker topped Evan Hall and Nate Bennett 8-4.
Sayre beat Myers 8-0 and Beilhart downed Baker 8-1 in singles play. Douglas defeated Hall 8-2 and Trouten edged Nate Bennett 8-5.
In the Ravenswood win, the swing match was Sayre and Beilhart winning a 7-3 tiebreaker for a 9-8 win over Ethan Cross and Sean Matics.
Ravenswood won the other two doubles matches as Michael Danshenko and Elisa McKown beat Hall and Nate Bennett 8-3 and Clayton Curry and Kurt Tenany downed Cullen Bennett and Chamberlain 8-1.
In singles, Sayre topped Cross 8-5, Beilhart beat Matics 8-5, Nate Bennett won by forfeit and Danshanko downed Hall 8-3.
