Big Red’s 7th inning beats Devils

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Steubenville Big Red baseball team touched home five times in the top of the seventh inning and freshman Anthony Zorne pitched a complete game in an 8-7 victory over host St. Clairsville on Tuesday.

Evan Westlake tripled, doubled and drove in three runs as Big Red snapped a two-game losing streak.

Matt Petrella homered, singled and drove in two and Bryan Pierro singled twice for an RBI. Zorne singled twice and Kai McClurg doubled.

Big Red (4-3) visits Brooke today.

Central blanks Potters

STEUBENVILLE – Kyle Laukert singled three times and doubled as the Steubenville Catholic Central baseball team blanked East Liverpool, 5-0, Tuesday at Vaccaro Field.

The Crusaders are 4-2 and take on Big Red at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Michael Barber took the win. He fanned five and walked two. Brenton Colabella singled and doubled.

Bruins lose on road

MORGANTOWN – In a back and forth affair, the University baseball team held off visiting Brooke, 10-9, Tuesday.

The Bruins, down 5-3 after three innings, made it 9-8 after scoring twice in the top of the sixth, but the Hawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Russell Schwertfeger continued swinging a hot bat with two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Ethan Sole doubles twice for three RBIs, Aaron Walker ripped a solo shot and Alec Buchmelter and Chad Harper contributed RBI singles.

Brooke hosts Steubenville today.

Patriots nip Huskies

WHEELING – Kelsi Johnson had a bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning with the infield drawn in to give Wheeling Park a 2-1 victory over visiting Harrison Central at the I-470 Youth Sports Complex.

Skylar Carrington picked up the win. She struck out six after her appearance in the fifth inning.

Katie Parkinson had three of Harrison Central’s four hits with a double and two singles. Katie Ellzy took the loss. She fanned four and walked a pair.

The Huskies visit Buckeye Local today.

WEIRTON – Hannah Absalom struck out 12 and walked no one as St. John Central took a 10-0 decision over host Weir High Tuesday in five innings.

Absalom also doubles and drove in two runs.

Ashlyn Drizake and Samantha Tate singled for the Red Riders, who have lost four in a row.

MORGANTOWN – Brooke registered three hits and the same number of errors in a 5-1 loss at University on Tuesday.

The Bruins have lost three in a row and fell to 5-6. They visit Morgantown High on Thursday.

Brette Geary tripled for Brooke. Taylor Simala and Cassi Camilletti both singled.
