Golden Bears sweep Riders

WEIRTON – Hancock County rivals Oak Glen and Weir locked horns Thursday night at Weir High School.

The Golden Bears came up big defensively in the fourth quarter, holding the Red Riders to just a pair of shots from the field to pull away for a 54-43 victory.

“It always feels good to get a win down here,” said Oak Glen head coach Scott Wiley. “They have dangerous shooters, and you just can’t relax on them because they shoot and make those threes.

“It feels pretty good. We have a goal. We’re looking at OVACs, and this is a good step for us.”

With Oak Glen leading 42-37 after three quarters, the home squad was only able to get a three-pointer from Alyssa Shingle and a two-point basket from Raegan Stead from the field during the final eight minutes. Stead also added a free throw as the Red Riders were outscored 12-6 during the fourth.

“We didn’t make any shots,” said Weir head coach Bill Smith. “You’ve got to make shots. People who were shooting in the first quarter and first half, had the ball late and didn’t want to shoot for some reason. Then people got into positions where they forced things.

“They tried to make things happen on their own. We weren’t playing as a group. It doesn’t work, it doesn’t work at all. We’ll give them (today) off and get back in the gym Saturday. That’s all you can do.”

Vanessa Hissam and Logan Andrews paced the Golden Bears in the final frame with four points each.

“I thought we had a real good effort,” said Wiley. “We tried to press early on them. They’re so darn quick you can’t press them too hard though. We tried to get the kids rotated in and wear them down a little bit.

“I think that’s what we did. The girls played really tough, and I’m just excited for the win.”

Jessica Stivason joined Hissam for team-high honors with 14 points on the night. Andrews joined the pair in double-digits with 10 points.

“They beat us in the paint,” said Smith. “I bet they made one or two shots from the outside. They beat us in the paint again. They did what they had to do to win.”

Stead scored a game-high 15 points for the Red Riders with Shingle contributing 13 points. Oak Glen travels to Madonna Saturday. Weir is on the road at Buckeye Local next Thursday.
