Dons defeat Knights
WEIRTON – Don Ogden and his Madonna girls will enter next week’s Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 1A Tournament on a roll after disposing of a solid Toronto club 51-33 Monday.
With the win, the Lady Blue Dons improve to 9-10 and will enter OVAC play as the No. 3 seed, meaning a visit to second-seeded Bellaire St. John next week.
“We’re elated,” Ogden said. “One of things we wanted to do was have some momentum going into the OVAC tournament. With the win tonight and the one Saturday (a 43-29 triumph over Oak Glen), we’re headed in the right direction. We still have some things to work on but we’re happy.
It was senior night inside the Bill Barrett Gymnasium and Madonna’s two 12th graders (Nicolette Sellitti and Amy Davis) played key roles in the victory.
Sellitti scored 12 points while Davis added nine.
“Our seniors have been there all year, sometimes the stats don’t show it, but they are the core of this team,” Ogden pointed out. “They represented themselves very well tonight.”
Powered by five markers from freshman Monica Bragg, the hosts grabbed a 9-8 advantage after the first period. The second stanza featured huge scoring runs by both clubs.
Two Bragg free throw makes and a conventional three-point play by Sellitti fueled a 10-0 Blue Don burst to open the quarter. Isabella Rosso banked home a triple and point guard Cameron Dowiak, who recorded six of Madonna’s 15 steals on the defensive end, added a deuce.
Toronto responded with a 12-0 run of its own to seize the lead at 20-19. Makayla Bauman accounted for eight of the Red Knight points.
