Big Red tops Huskies; Bears sweep Dons

CADIZ – In a game where 85 free throws were shot, and 52 made, the Steubenville Big Red girls basketball team converted 17-of-29 in a fourth quarter where it outscored host Harrison Central 25-8 in a 62-52 victory Saturday afternoon.

Mytia Baker paced Big Red (10-1) with a game-high 18 points.

Emiley Masloski added 17 and Dana Poole 12 for Steubenville, which was 30-of-50 from the stripe.

The Huskies, who were 22-of-35 from the line, was led by Katie Ellzy’s 14 points. Paige Richards added 12 and Jess Ledger eight.

Harrison Central hosts Buckeye Local on Monday, while Big Red entertains Weir High on Thursday.

Bears stop Madonna

NEW MANCHESTER – The Oak Glen girls basketball team outscored visiting Madonna 25-9 in the second half and earned a 54-32 victory Saturday.

Vanessa Hissam led the winners with a game-high 16 points, while Casey Patterson added 10.

Isabella Rosso paced the Blue Dons with 12 points, all coming from beyond the arc. Monica Bragg added nine.

The teams combined to go 13-of-41 from the free throw line.

Bruins fall to Mohigans

WELLSBURG – The Brooke boys basketball team lost 59-52 to Morgantown Saturday at the Brooke Athletic Complex.

The Bruins were led by a trio of double-digit scorers led by Eric Johnson’s 19 points. Thomas Cole added 17 points with Russell Schwertfweger chipped in 13.

Brooke (5-4) hosts John Marshall Tuesday.

Weir loses at classic

BURGETTSTOWN – The Weir boys basketball team lost 60-31 Washington High School Saturday during the Chuck Mahoney Basketball Classic at Burgettstown High School.

Dylan Cassiadoro paced the Red Riders with 11 points. Andre Sims added eight points.

Weir (0-9) takes on Steubenville Big Red Tuesday at the Crimson Center.

SALINEVILLE – The Edison boys basketball lost at Southern Local, 55-48, Saturday.

Alec Jones led the Wildcats with 18. Dylan Jones scored 14 and Ryan Kramarich added eight.

Oak Glen beats Dons

NEW MANCHESTER – The Oak Glen boys basketball team defeated Madonna 43-38 Saturday.

The Golden Bears were led by Cody Howell’s 14 points.

Matt McLaughlin chipped in with 12 points.

James Carnes’ 12-point night led the Blue Dons. Nate Guio added eight.

Both teams are in action Tuesday with Oak Glen traveling to Beaver Local and Madonna hosting Beallsville.
