STEUBENVILLE - Often graduating high school seniors are encouraged to do great things and perhaps even to change the world.

As parent-community representative for Steubenville High School's 39th-annual Academic Awards Banquet, Mark Nehrbas said it is possible that a member of the school's Class of 2011 will go on to great success.

He noted, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love."

Nehrbas, who is executive director of Christian outreach for the Franciscan University of Steubenville, said those words were spoken by Mother Teresa, whose international efforts to aid the poor began with the starving and sick living in the slums of India.

He told the seniors that their education and experiences in extracurricular activities have taught them how working hard, learning from one's mistakes, working with others and valuing every person are key to success.

"Opportunities for the future are wide open and endless. You have received many blessings from God, your family and your teachers," Nehbras said.

"Now go out and make the world a better place. You can do it," he advised.

Charles Kokiko, Steubenville City Schools director of curriculum, told the seniors the many scholarships presented to them Sunday are "both a gift and a challenge."

He noted they are expected to put the education and experience gained at Steubenville High School and in their future schooling to good use.

Quoting former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, he said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give," he said.

Also participating in the program were valedictorians, Sophie Lewis, Tyler McGee, Hannah Poyo and Rebekah Poyo; salutatorian Mark Miller, and others in the school's top 10: Janelle Labishak, Allie Agresta, Jessie Rawson and Michelle Magyer.

Among the many honored Sunday were the school's University Scholars, who are enrolled in college-level courses at the school. They are Lewis, Hannah Poyo, Rebecca Poyo, Miller, Labishak, Agresta, Rawson, Magyer, Blake Carroll, Zane Costlow, Alexandra DeVaul, Dominic Garay, Nichole Gardner, Kyle Gaughan, Chris Isaac, Miriam Kovach, Zachary Lamantia, Jake Linn, Quintin Littlejohn, John Macre, Xavier McAllister, Rebecca McKitrick, Kelli Milliken, Brianna Parrish, Zyaire Pearson, Teryl Pendergrast, Anthony Pierro, Joven Pilutti, Wesley Prichard, Michael Rawson, Alex Reed, Jonathan Suriano, Paige Taylor, Terri Lynn Wolfe and Brittany Young.

Kokiko, who led the awards program, also took time to recognize Sharon Travis, Steubenville City Schools director of curriculum and pupil services, for her coordination of the program over the last 10 years and her assistance in planning Sunday's event.

During the program, the following scholarships were presented to Steubenville High School students:

Women's Club of Steubenville: Allie Agresta.

Steubenville Rotary Club: Allie Agresta.

Medical Mutual: Michael Rawson.

Kindred Spirit: Joe Thomas.

Steubenville Lions Club: Allie Agresta and Michael Rawson.
