Night, while the steel imports were beginning to be a problem in the late 50's, the government wasn't the only agency dragging their feet to help curb them. The heads of the various steel mills, and yes, even the leaders of many local unions stood by and watched as the problem grew to the proportion it is today. CEO's from mills attended meetings supposedly to "help stop imports" while they were investing their money in mills overseas. The United States will never be a major producer of steel again, particularly in this valley.

When I was 4 years old, my father showed me a poster at the bank that stated how much steel was being imported into our country. That was 60 years ago and the government is just now beginning to take steel imports seriously. Yes, I'd say that the government has recognized the problem too little and too late.
