NEW MANCHESTER - The Oak Glen volleyball team began its season with a pair of wins Wednesday, beating Beaver Local 25-21, 25-11 and Brooke 25-15, 22-25, 25-16 in a tri-match. Beaver Local downed the Bruins 25-17, 25-20.
Against the Beavers, Alexis Swan collected 11 points, one ace and two blocks, Jessica Stivason seven kills, four blocks, five digs and three points, Taylor McKay 10 points, two aces and two digs, Kayla Campos six digs, Madison Juszczak seven points, two kills and two digs, Alex Arnott two digs and two points, Emmy Delekta 12 assists and 10 points, Kenzie Rosenlieb seven assists and two points, Taylor Allison five points, four kills and two digs and Brianna Evans two kills.
For Beaver Local, Tannar Dolhun had one kills and one block, Camryn Jarrett three kills, Sam Kendall seven kills, Connor six assists, Ashlyn Milhoan three kills, four digs and six points, Lynsey Reckner four assists, Bobbie Ann Theiss two kills and Ashton Roberts four points.
Stivason led the way against Brooke with 10 points, six kills, four blocks and three digs, while Allison delivered 10 points, seven kills and three digs. Campos added nine digs, Juszczak four points, five kills and two digs, Arnott five kills, Swan five blocks and two kills, McKay two digs, Delekta 18 assists and 14 points, Rosenlieb eight assists and six points and Evans three kills.
Angela Staffileno paced the Bruins with 12 blocks and nine kills. Kourtney Leonard added three kills, two blocks and four digs, Courtney Elliott 22 digs and Emily Stuck four blocks, 10 digs and 15 assists.
Taylor Hair contributed three kills, two aces and four digs, Adrianna Baily four kills and five blocks, Abby Adams four blocks and Jenna Cooper two blocks, five digs and four assists.
In the loss to Beaver Local, Staffileno had six kills and eight blocks, Leonard four kills, Hair three kills and five digs and Adams three kills.
Elliott totaled 13 digs, Baily three aces, Isabella Preston three digs and Stuck 12 assists and two blocks.
For the Beavers, Dolhoun had four kills, Jarrett one kill and one block, Kendall two kills, Connor seven points, Milhoan two assists and five digs, Theiss one kills, Roberts six digs, Reckner six points and four digs and Jordan Simpson six points.
Brooke and the Golden Bears are back in action Saturday at the VFW Invitational at Oak Glen.
The eight-team, round-robin tournament is sponsored by Chester VFW Post 6450. Participating along with Brooke and Oak Glen are Weir High, Parkersburg South, Morgantown Trinity, Hampshire County, Wheeling Park and Tyler Consolidated.
The first match is scheduled for 9 a.m. in the two pools with the championship match slated for approximately 5:30 p.m. All matches will be the best of three.
Big Red tops Patriots
STEUBENVILLE - The Steubenville volleyball team got back to its winning ways with a 21-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-15, 15-8 victory over visiting Wheeling Park Wednesday inside the Crimson Center.
Taylor Young paced Steubenville with six points, 17 kills, 12 assists and nine digs. Annie Nehrbas collected six points, 14 kills, five blocks and nine digs and Carlee Jenkins 17 points, four kills and two blocks.
Tenia Barker added 17 points, two kills and 10 digs, Rhiannon Petrisko 13 points, two kills, three blocks and eight digs, T'Shay Smith seven points, two kills, 10 assists and five digs, Lexie Biasi three points, six assists and three digs and Izzie Biasi 10 digs.
Big Red visits Edison for a 5:30 p.m. match on Tuesday.
Creek edges Red Knights
TORONTO - Aaron Foldi earned medalist honors with a 41 Wednesday as the Indian Creek golf team defeated Toronto, 190-193, at Dyer Country Club.
Justin Dailey and Tanner Thermes each shot 49 and Cody Hopkins 51 for the Redskins.
Sante Carducci paced the Red Knights with a 42. Ben Hlivko shot 48, Jared McVicker 51 and Parker Wright 52.
Brooke wons tri-match
STEUBENVILLE - Brooke senior Logan Lojszczyk shot even par 36 at Steubenville Country Club Wednesday as the Bruins shot 182 to beat Steubenville (204) and Oak Glen (226).
Mario Boni fired a 39 for Brooke. Luc Pannett shot 53 and Justin Shelton 54.
Kasey Peterson led Big Red with his 43. Josh Gault shot 49 and Isaiah Lee-Granatir and Isaiah Herring each had 56.
Trey Reese and Haley Spurlock each shot 52 for the Golden Bears. Jason Chappell shot 59 and Mike Watkins 63.
In the remainder of action, Harrison Central knocked off Wheeling Central, 7-2, in boys soccer; East Liverpool swept Weir High in volleyball; Wheeling Central topped Steubenville Catholic Central, 4-0, in girls soccer.
