ADENA - Residents at Autumn Healthcare of Adena care about the "three Rs," colloquially known as "reading, writing and 'rithmetic." According to Activities Director Becky Goundry, that's why they wanted to donate school supplies to two children in need at local schools.
The residents came together and donated from their own funds. They were able to purchase two backpacks, which were then filled with pencils, notebooks and other supplies, in addition to McDonald's gift cards.
The supplies will be given to Buckeye Local West Elementary in Adena and Ayers Elementary School in Martins Ferry. The schools will then determine which lucky students receive the free supplies. Goundry said these schools were chosen because many of the facility's residents have family members attending. Additionally, students from Buckeye West have made cards for residents in the past and have participated in Easter egg hunts and the recent Jamboree party.

Goundry is hoping the residents' generosity will inspire other nursing homes to donate as well.
"If we can do it, so can they," she said. "We might start something and help more kids."
Upcoming events for the nursing home include a craft show and flea market set for Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost to rent a space is $10, and the money will go back to the residents. Vendors of all varieties are welcome, from jewelry sellers to anyone with yard sale items. Some vendors already on hand include Origami Owl, Avon, Premiere Jewelry and Tastefully Simple.
There will also be a raffle for a handmade wreath and a resident-run concession stand will be available for refreshments.
Autumn Healthcare has held a craft show previously, but this will be the first flea market.
Call (740) 546-3620 and ask to speak to Goundry or Administrator Tom Foster to learn about acquiring a space. Autumn Healthcare is located at 213 U.S. Route 250.
