Tyler West, seated with his mother Tyra West, was named the recipient of the inaugural Art Pugh Foundation Scholarship. West, an Indian Creek graduate, will continue his academic career at Eastern Gateway Community College for two years before pursuing a degree at a four-year institution. Also on hand for the presentation were, from left, A.J. Abrams (secretary), Joe Dunlevy (board member), Bill Kerr (vice president) and Sean Tucker (executive director). The foundation is a college scholarship program for children who have either lost a parent or immediate family member to cancer or member who is a cancer survivor. The organization was founded last year by Steubenville Catholic Central boys basketball coach and Indian Creek graduate Sean Tucker, a longtime close family friend to Pugh, who died in 2013, after a lengthy bout with cancer. Scholarships are limited to the family of Pugh and to the students attending the Indian Creek School District. Funds for the work are raised through special events, individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and private grants. Tyler was effected by cancer when he lost his father, Mac, a year ago. Pugh's mother, Sharon, shared a story, "Mac West and Arthur was chemo buddies you could say. These two would have chemo appointments at the same time and Tyler's father Mac would be very positive with Arthur during there battles." Said Tucker, "If Art had a say in who should be chosen for his first scholarship he would have said Tyler West. On behalf of the family and board we appreciate all who were involved in making this foundation possible and allowing us to help others who have been effected by cancer in honor of the late Arthur Pugh." The Art Pugh Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and all contributions are tax-deductible. Money for this scholarship is generated through an annual fundraiser in April and also through private donations that can be made at www.TheArthurPughFoundation.org.
