WEIRTON - The Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox will sponsor the annual Serb Fest picnic from noon to 9 p.m. July 27 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds located on Kings Creek Road, a mile east of the North 12 Street intersection.
"The people of Holy Resurrection Church look forward to welcoming all their friends and neighbors from near and far on July 27," said the Rev. Rade Merick.
The event will include Serbian food, drink and entertainment. Volleyball, basketball and horseshoes will be available. A playground is on the grounds.
Dozens of lambs and hundreds of chickens will be prepared over open fires at the barbecue building. Both Serbian and American dishes will be available. The parish women will have homemade pastries and desserts available.
Serbian traditional dishes include sarma, cabbage leaves stuffed with ground meat and cooked in tomato sauce; cabbage and noodles; sausage sandwiches with peppers and onions; gibanica, a cheese-filled pastry; cevapcici, beef and pork sausages; and slivovitsa, plum brandy.
The Holy Resurrection Tamburitzans will perform Serbian songs and dances, beginning at approximately 4 p.m. The Srpski Sinovi Orchestra also will perform, and those attending are invited to join in the kolo, or circle dance.
"'Dobro nam dosli' means 'welcome,' and the Serbs of the Upper Ohio Valley welcome everyone from far and near to their celebration of Serbian food, music and culture," said Merick. "As the Serbs say, 'prijatno' - 'enjoy!'"
The picnic grounds also are home to the Serbian Men's Club's weekly Wednesday chicken blast. Parking is free, and the event will move under the pavilion in the case of inclement weather.
