Melda M. Owens, 86, of Canton, Ohio, formerly of Brilliant, Ohio passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at the Canton Christian Home in Canton, Ohio.
She was born July 12, 1927, in Island Creek Township, Ohio, a daughter of the late John A. and Margaret A. (Midcap) Birkhimer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence W. "Dutch" Owens, on July 18, 1992; two brothers, Jack Birkhimer and Conrad Midcap; and a sister, Helen Moore.
Melda was an employee of the former Kobackers in Brilliant; a telephone operator at the former Ohio Bell Co. in Brilliant; and a homemaker. She was a member of the North River Avenue Christian Church in Toronto, Ohio.
Surviving are two sons, John (Gladys) Owens of North Canton, Ohio and Jeff (Barbara) Owens of Sunbury, Ohio; five grandchildren, Rebecca Owens, Clint Owens, Matt (Jennifer) Owens, Andy Owens and Josh Owens; and two great-grandchildren, Katelyn Owens and Hailee Hartmann.
Friends will be received the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant, on Wednesday July 9 from 1 p.m. until the time of her funeral services at 3 p.m. with Pastor Larry Burkett, officiating. Private interment at Fort Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville, Ohio.
