Bergholz Area Museum open on Friday before parade and Sunday, too
The Bergholz Area Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday before the Fourth of July parade begins.
Because of the holiday weekend, the museum also will be open from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The museum usually is open the first Sunday of each month, May through November, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The featured display for July is a collection of memorabilia of nearly Mechanicstown, Ohio. A variety of new materials also has been added to the museum's permanent collection.
The permanent collection includes pictures and memorabilia related to area communities, the schools, local mines and various businesses.
The museum is located at the corner of Second and Jefferson streets across from the town parking lot. Admission is free.
Jefferson County Retired Teachers updated on museum, insurance
The June meeting of the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association was held at Bell Chapel United Methodist Church with a welcome offered by President Dave Nicholson.
Diane Neptune, information and protection chairman, informed the group about some updated information regarding Aetna Insurance.
Avis Henry reported the e-mail address is up and running.
Members heard an update on the Pleasant Hill School House Museum, which 50 second-graders from Stanton Elementary School visited on April 25. Connie Crawford and Karen Lundquist taught old-fashioned games to the children; and Henry and Joyce Zimmerman taught arithmetic and reading, using a McGuffey reader. Half the day was spent at the museum with the other half involving a visit to Historic Fort Steubenville, where the pupils learned about the Ohio River, the wildnerness and area wildlife.
Crawford encouraged second-grade classes in the area to plan to visit the museum.
Bill Jabs, district director, reported the cost of living was reduced from 3 percent to 2 percent. He encouraged retired teachers to join JCRTA. Gloria Renda can be notified about retired teachers in order to send information to them.
Vice President Jane Wittmer introduced Capt. Steven Griffin of the Salvation Army of Jefferson County, which has had a presence in Steubenville for 131 years. He discussed its programs for children, women, men and senior citizens. November nad December are especially busy months, and volunteers are always needed and appreciated, he said.
After lunch, Don Ullman of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association addressed the membership.
Donations were collected for the WEBA Food Pantry that serves the communities of Wolf Run, East Springfield, Bergholz and Amsterdam.
The next board meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 13 at the Schiappa branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. The next regular meeting of the JCRTA will be held Sept. 9 at the First Presbyterian Church in Toronto.
SHS Class of 1954 making plans for 60-year reunion this summer
Plans are being completed for the 60-year reunion of the Steubenville High School Class of 1954.
An informal mixer will be held at the Steubenville Country Club on Aug. 1, beginning at 7 p.m. On Aug. 2 beginning at 1 p.m., those interested can take a private tour of the Jefferson County Historical Association Museum on Franklin Avenue, Steubenville.
The final reunion event will be the banquet at the Steubenville Country Club on Aug. 2 with the social hour beginning at 6 p.m., the class picture at 6:30 p.m., and the banquet served at 7 p.m. The evening will conclude with listening and dancing to music of the 1950s provided by disc jockey Dave Hunt.
A pre-reunion dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on July 31 at Naples Spaghetti House on North Street, Steubenville, for all classmates who would like to attend.
Tri-State Writers Society to meet in Froehlich's patio area on Tuesday
The Tri State Writers Society, led by award-winning local author Karen Majoris-Garrison, will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the patio area of Froehlich's Classic Corner in Steubenville.

Jewett Volunteer Fire Department
to host fundraiser dinner July 13
The Jewett Volunteer Fire Department will host a baked steak and baked chicken dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 13.
The menu will include vegetables, salad, bread, dessert and beverage.
Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children.
