STEUBENVILLE - The annual Fourth of July fireworks will move back to Belleview Park this year.
Mayor Domenick Mucci formally requested the city's parks and recreation board approve reserving the park for the day-long Independence Day celebration to conclude with a fireworks display launched from the former golf course adjacent to the park.
Mucci said the rain date will be July 6 at the park.
"We used to hold the July 4 celebration at Belleview Park for a number of years. When the golf course was sold to Franciscan University of Steubenville we moved the events and fireworks to the marina area. Then we moved the fireworks back to the park for one year. For the last three years the city held the fireworks display on the hillside behind the Hollywood City Center in conjunction with the Stars and Stripes concert sponsored by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Earlier this year the chamber announced the concert would not be held at Harding Stadium, so we made the decision to move the fireworks back to Belleview Park," announced Mucci during a nearly three-hour recreation board meeting Wednesday night.
"On July 4 we will have free swimming at the Belleview Pool and 5th Ward Councilman Willie Paul is coordinating a series of all-star ball games at Belleview Park. We will also be holding our annual senior citizen luncheon on July 4 at the PrimeTime Senior Citizen Center. We have traditionally held that luncheon at the John F. Kennedy apartment building, but this year we will offer free bus rides to the Senior Citizen Center through the services of the Steel Valley Transit Service. We will ask the senior citizens in the JFK apartments and the Gaylord Towers to register their interest in attending the luncheon so we know how many riders we will have that day," continued Mucci.
He also said there may be some vendors at the lower ball fields during the July 4 events.
In other business, Bill Rohrey of the Beatty Park Disc Golf Association said he is prepared to start repair the disc golf tee boxes on the Beatty Park course.
"The work will be done by the disc golf association. The city agreed to provide us with $3,000 this year in funding and we will be purchasing the material this week to rebuild nine of the tee boxes," explained Rohrey.
The board also heard from Jason Kernahan who received permission to proceed with the construction of a batting cage at the lower Belleview ball fields.
Kernahan said local contractor Steve Vukelic has volunteered to build the batting cages.
Recreation Director Mary Beth Sills updated the board members on her proposed revised facility request form she said will include rules and regulations for renting a recreation facility.
The board approved several facility reservation requests including:
A request from the L.A.W.S. Movement for the third-annual Lee West birthday bash on July 19 at Belleview Park.
A request from the Steubenville Tigers cheerleaders to use the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center gymnasium on July 11 for a quarter auction fundraiser event.
A youth wellness kick-off event Friday at the MLK Center.
A request from the Ohio Valley Ladies Tennis Association to use the Belleview tennis courts on Tuesdays and Wednesday from June through August.
The Ville Burn-Off on July 12-13 at the lower Belleview Park area.
The Steubenville Tigers cheering camp June 23-27 at the MLK Center.
A request from Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church for an outdoor camp ministry at Jim Wood Park Shelter B on July 10.
The Steubenville Striders Track Club which requested the Belleview Pool for a year-end swim party contingent on available lifeguards.
The Shelley Jett Foundation basketball tournament at the MLK Center outdoor basketball courts July 25-27.
The board tabled three requests because an organization representative did not attend the board meeting.
Sills reminded the board the Belleview Pool is set to open for the summer at 11 a.m. Saturday.
"We are still looking for certified lifeguards. We are at the bare minimum and are hoping to receive more applications. The pool will be open from Saturday until August. We have posted the pool fees and we have applications for fee assistance available at the MLK Center," noted Sills.
And Sills announced the recreation department will be bringing the Hershey Track and Field games to Steubenville.
According to Sills, information about the event is available by calling the recreation department at (740) 283-6000, extension 4000.
