"An Apple A Day" youth wellness program kicks off Friday and will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 905 Market St., Steubenville.
"This program is a continuation of our youth wellness program from summer 2013," explained event organizer Cynthia Smith, community developer of the Neighborhood Community Development Center at Urban Mission Ministries.
"We have been awarded grant funding to host the program a second year," Smith said.
"This kickoff event gives community youth the opportunity to register for local summer youth programs, vacation Bible schools and youth wellness events."
Smith added, "Our goal is to promote youth wellness through fun and interactive programs that teach and encourage youth to adopt healthier eating habits and introduce them to ways in which they can make physical activity a part of their everyday lifestyle."
The free event that will serve as a forum in which youth can sign up for free summer activities and events will include giveaways, food and music by disc jockeys William Harvey Jr. and William Jones.
It will include a presence by various organizations, including the Tigers football team and cheerleaders; kids nutrition by Jamie Maley; line dancing and Zumba; Eastern Gateway Community College; Community Inc.; the Upper Ohio Valley United Youth Workers; the United Way of Jefferson County; U.N.I.T.Y. garden; LaBelle Neighbors Who Care; Belleview pool; the YMCA Wellness Center at St. John Arena; and local churches promoting their vacation Bible schools.
