WEIRTON - A cool and overcast day didn't keep the golfers off the fairways Monday to support the Weirton United Way during its 33rd Golf Classic fundraiser event.
Twenty-two teams took part in the annual event, proceeds from which will benefit the United Way's 2014 campaign to raise money for more than a dozen area agencies and organizations.
Tournament Director John Kirlangitis welcomed the golfers before they teed off shortly after 10 a.m.

He thanked the event sponsors, including Tri-State Medical, which served as the tournament's first breakfast sponsor, as well as the gold- and platinum-level sponsors. Kirlangitis noted of those higher-level sponsors, all have supported the tournament for the last nine years.
Platinum-level sponsors included ArcelorMittal-Weirton and Reynolds Services Inc. Gold sponsors included Tri-State Pharmacy, First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union and Serra Village.
"Without these extremely generous groups and businesses, we wouldn't be profitable," Kirlangitis explained.
The Weirton United Way Golf Classic traditionally brings in half of the funds for the annual campaign.
United Way 2014 Campaign Chair Michael Hagg also expressed his appreciation for the participating teams and sponsors, as well as the work of Kirlangitis, United Way Director Kristin Bowman-Cross, Linda Stear and the volunteers of the Golf Classic committee.
"Without them, this wouldn't be half the tournament it is," Hagg said.
A final tally from the day was not immediately available.
