MINGO JUNCTION - The winter months and recent rain storms have not been kind to the roof at Indian Creek High School.
Reuben Hall of Tremco Inc. attended Thursday night's Indian Creek Local School District board meeting to discuss the status of that roof.
"In 1996, we did an analysis of the roof, and it was in pretty good shape," Hall explained. "It was the second roof that was installed at that building. It was determined at that time to tear out and replace some wet areas on the roof, and restoration of the roof was completed. At that point, the roof was 20 years old.
"We are now in the 18th year of restoration, and we are starting to have some issues with that roof," he continued. "Now, pretty much the whole roof is saturated and starting to leak more than it has in past years. Right now, the roof is in very bad shape and cannot be restored. It needs replaced fully."
He explained that there are a few ways to approach the issue.
"You can leave it as it is and continue to patch it, which will keep getting more expensive - annually is around $15,000," he stated. "You have about 40,000-square-feet of roof at the high school and 25,000 at Buchanan. However, the Buchanan building can be restored as it was 18 years ago. We do not have any other roof issues with any of the other buildings in the district."
He noted that a new roof of a single-ply or double-ply material would cost between $600,000 and $700,000. A 30-year roof would cost about $1.1 million.
Superintendent John Rocchi told board members the roof situation is a huge issue to consider.
"We obviously do not have $700,000 sitting around to put into a roof," he began. "We really need to think about what we are going to do here. We have a little bit of money we may be able to move around, but we do not have the amount that we need."
He also noted that a levy issue plays a key part in the decision.
"We also have to think about going back to the voters for a levy regarding a new high school," he said.
In other business, the board:
Approved continuing membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the 2014-2015 school year.
Permitted the initial list of certified/licensed substitute teachers to be employed for the 2014-2015 school year, as adopted by the Jefferson County Governing Board.
Accepted an agreement with Kevin L. McKinstry, CLU, as an agent of Markel National Student insurance, to offer parents or guardians the option of purchasing student insurance for the 2014-2015 school year.
Entered into a three-year agreement for fiscal years 2014, 2015 and 2016 with the local government services section of the state auditor's office to provide compilation services for GAAP-based financial reporting at a cost not to exceed $7,500.00 per year.
Accepted the food service bid and agreement with Nutrition Inc. for the 2014-15 school year and establish prices.
Adopted a resolution to sell Senior Passes to those individuals 65 and older at a cost of $40 each. These passes will be valid for the 2014-15 school year and will cover admittance to all home Indian Creek athletic events. The passes will not cover parking fees.
Renewed a one-year contract for Brad Kessel.
Approved the resignation request of middle school guidance counselor John Nese and Wintersville Elementary teacher Christina Haught.
Adopted a resolution to non-renew the teaching contract of Theresa Paterra.
Permitted the elimination of the economics and business teaching position at the high school.
Approved Taylor Fithen and Mary Santicola as custodians on the classified substitute list.
Agreed to allow the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District to lease space at the Bantam Ridge building from Aug. 1 through Dec. 31.
Approved an agreement with the Jefferson County Educational Service Center Governing Board to provide public relations coordinator services through the assignment of Amy Gareis to the district from Aug. 1 through July 31, 2015.
The senior awards banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 27 at St. Florian Hall and graduation will be at 7 p.m. May 30 at the middle school gymnasium.
