The Jefferson County Historical Association has announced the winner of its first scholarship.
The award for best essay reflecting the history of Jefferson County is Todd Yater, a senior at Buckeye Local High School. The $200 award is for his essay "The Flagging Block," which details how children, as far back as 1928, directed the flow of traffic at the Rush Run railroad underpass near Route 7 for nickels and dimes.
Judy Brancazio, historical association president, will present the scholarship at the BLHS awards assembly on May 22.
The historical association, which will display the winning essay at the open house, expressed appreciation to all the high school seniors who participated and to the Tri-State Writers Society members for reading the entries and choosing the top four that were presented to the JCHA board of directors for final review.
