BLOOMINGDALE - A 0.5-mill renewal levy for operations at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School will be on the May 6 ballot for voters' consideration.
The 10-year renewal proposal generates about $500,000 annually for current operating expenses, purchasing and replacement of tools, equipment, furnishings and repairs, improving, renovating, expanding or for reconstruction of buildings, according to Todd Phillipson, district superintendent.
"Really, it's for the facility, tools and infrastructure," said Phillipson, adding there were no new taxes or revenue being asked of district voters for the proposal. "This is a renewal, meaning there are no new taxes. We were fortunate to pass the 1-mill levy in November because of the need for a new roof and other improvements to the facility. This renewal (proposal) is at the same rate as the last time it was passed - 0.5 mill."
Phillipson said the renewal would cost a district homeowner with a residence valued at $75,000 less than $12 per year. He added it is imperative to school operations for voters to once again approve the renewal, which last was passed by district voters in 2004.
"We really need the funds," Phillipson said. "We put ourselves out there so we can educate the student so they can get a career. We've educated 6,000 to 7,000 students since (being a vocational school), and we need the funds to provide for the students' education.
"We really want people to know this is just a renewal," he continued. "We're not asking for any additional money."
