DAVIS, James Thomas, 71, of Steubenville, OH, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, at his home.
He was born February 22, 1942, a son of the late W. Everett and Doris Davis in Steubenville, OH.
He was raised in Steubenville OH, but also lived with an aunt in Lake Milton, OH, and with a sister in Wichita, KS.
He graduated from Steubenville High School in 1962 and later graduated from Wheeling Barber College. He served in the Navy as a medical technician and was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington. He was appointed to the Steubenville Fire Department in 1972 and served as a firefighter until he became Clerk-Secretary of the department in the 1980s. He was instrumental in helping the department become fully computerized after he attended Microsoft courses in Seattle. Jim also was a barber in the Wintersville area for 25 years.
Jim was very active in the Clean Community Systems of SteubenvilleWintersville and served on its board of directors for numerous years serving a term as its president in the 1990s. He served on the Steubenville Homecoming Fiesta board and later joined the Jefferson County Recycling Board for a term. He also volunteered for the Urban Mission and was active in the Ohio Association of Retired Police and Firefighters where he served as secretary. He was a member of Finley United Methodist Church for almost 65 years which he began attending in his youth.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William and David.
He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy of Quincy, IL, and Betty of Grant County, OK; brother, John; two children, JoAnn and Jimmie and former wife, Mary Lou.
Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville Tuesday 4-8 p.m. where a service will be held Wednesday 10 a.m. with Rev. Delbert Lash officiating. Burial at Fort Steuben.
In lieu of flowers, Jim requested donations be made to the Jefferson County Humane Society.
